A cigarette contains a lot of harmful substances, including nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar. The first substance, nicotine, is absorbed into the blood very quickly and reaches the brain within 10 seconds. The substance provides an accelerated heartbeat and higher blood pressure. It can damage and constrict the blood vessels. Nicotine is also the most well-known substance, especially the addictive effect. In addition, carbon monoxide displaces oxygen from the blood, so there is less space for oxygen. You can notice the shortage of oxygen because your condition deteriorates: you get tired faster. Tar, finally, is the substance that causes the smoker's cough. Because of tar, the lungs can not clean themselves properly, because the tar makes the cleaners, the cilia, sticky. Coughing helps to get the dirt out of the lungs.
