The British wanted to succeed but didn't because their strategy made it easier for the Americans to overtake their army. The Americans also had an advantage because they knew the area of Kings Mountain while the British did not. This in turn led to a fatal mistake for the British troops and a victory for the Americans.
One thousand American frontiersmen under Colonel Campbell gathered in the backcountry on the border of the Carolinas to resist Ferguson’s advance. [British] Major Ferguson refused to surrender to the Colonists, and led a charge down the mountain that ended up being suicidal as he and many of his men were cut down by a hail of patriot bullets.

Effectiveness of Leadership in the Battle

American--The American leadership was very effective, they gathered patriotic frontier men who owned weapons and ammo that could also listen to orders. When they had 2 soldiers go missing on the way to their next destination, they assumed these soldiers went to go warn the British, so they changed their march path and set up to resist the advance of the British soldiers; they did so effectively as they defeated Ferguson's troops when they tried to advance with a charge down the mountain.
British--The British leadership was not very effective because the leader lead his troops in a charge. The charge eventually became a suicidal mission. This suicidal mission eventually killed him and his loyal troops.

Effectiveness of Resources

American--The effectiveness of American resources was more positive than negative. The negative side was they were not being funded by an entire government that had been established for hundreds of years; the positive side was that the patriots had weapons and were used to working with their hands. They also had farm tools that could be used as weapons if necessary.
British--The effectiveness of resources was not very good. They were on rough terrain that they weren't very familiar with. They also didn't have enough troops and ammunition to effectively defeat the Americans. The lack of efficient amounts of troops and ammunition is due to the fact that they were supposed to meet with more troops but, they never made it.

American--The patriots--while being the rebels of this war--had rather effective strategy; they were logical and unified. When they thought they may have been betrayed by two soldiers that went missing, they changed their pathway in order to still surprise the British (this is a strategy we seen used a few times during the Revolutionary War; they were not predictable enough for the British to know what was coming next).
British--The strategy was not very effective because he had the British troops stay in the rocky ridge of Kings Mountain until he decided to go down the mountain. This was ineffective because it led the troops to the Americans. This in turn caused the death of the British Troops.
