"Chaque fois que le Géant remue son flanc fatigué, il ébranle par ses grondements la TRINACRIE entière et le ciel se voile de fumée."
Lors de la Gigantomachie , Encelade (un Géant)fut mis hors de combat par la déesse Athéna. Il fut enterré en Sicile sous le Mont Etna. (Elle jette la Sicile sur lui selon Apollodore.)
Les éruptions volcaniques  passaient pour être la respiration du géant  de même que les  secousses telluriques étaient provoquées par les mouvements du Géant sous la montagne. (Mythes similaires avec Typhon et Vulcain).
En Grèce un tremblement de terre est toujours appelé FRAPPE D'ENCELADE.
Le mouvement baroque aime cette image du géant Encelade qui hurle enseveli dans la roche et la lave.
Versailles le Bosquet d'Encelade réalisé en plomb doré par Marsy bordé de fontaines sur un dessin de Charles Le Brun en 1675
C'est un symbole pour Louis XIV pour appeler ses ennemis à la prudence.

Sources : La onzième IDYLLE, du poète sicilien THEOCRITE rédigé en grec aux alentours de 275 avant notre ère (point de vue du cyclope)et dans les Métamorphoses XIII d’Ovide (point de vue dramatique) 

 Polyphème le cyclope s’éprend de Galatée une néréide (nymphe marine). Celle- ci lui préfère le berger sicilien Acis.

Polyphème les ayant surpris ensemble, tue son rival en l’écrasant sous un rocher.

Galatée prie les dieux de changer le sang d’Acis en une rivière qui porte son nom en Sicile. (ACI)

Le dieu grec HEPHAÏSTOS, VULCAIN tenait une forge dans l'Etna aidé par des cyclopes forgerons. Les romains pensaient que Vulcain se trouvaient à Vulcano (île éolienne) au nord de la Sicile. (selon Thucydide qui reprend les récits des navigateurs anciens au VIIIème siècle avant notre ère.)
Le poète grec Pindare explique que le monstre Typhon se trouve dans la bouche de l'Etna.
