To keep students engaged, I make the class structure easy to maneuver so they are not searching for things in Canvas each week.

I start the class with a student introduction activity, where I give them a choice of questions about their interests, favorite foods, etc. I also have them ask me questions (within reason) that I will answer.

I try to incorporate valuable online tools like Perusall. This is a free online tool (with Canvas integration!) that allows students to collectively annotate a reading assignment, leaving and answering questions for one another, highlighting interesting sections, and so forth. I think it's a great alternative (and a better incentive) than the standard reading quiz!

Competition

An activity that creates an effective engagement with student is taking place during review of each chapter.

I design the review as a competition between different groups of students. They are really happy during review, and they show high level of collaboration skills in other to be the winner.

Relevance

Every semester, I try to come up with interesting and engaging examples relevant to current events and pop culture trends. Applying course concepts to material that students are already familiar with helps to engage their attention and makes the information easier to recall later.

Padlet and Discussions

Ironically, I used Padlet in my in-person class today to do a brainstorming activity for their research essays. I have also used Padlet in online classes for students to brainstorm essays or create connections across topics. I also like using discussion boards to encourage students to collaborate.

I typically seek out (and most times) find or design books or book passages, diagrams, flowcharts, gifs and other simplified descriptions of what is being taught and what I want students to grasp most!

I use the announcements page when communicating with students. It is really helpful and students are timely with their responses. The discussion boards are really helpful for engaging with students. Requiring them to leave a post keeps them active.
