The chapter on inclusivity is really resonating with me right now, based on the cultural divide that seems to be getting worse. I serve all the students in my library and it's really hard to keep from self-censoring.

A Truly Literate Person

In order to be truly literate, we must include digital literacies and critical consumption of information. (Ch. 4)

I enjoyed the class discussion about making sure our libraries include diverse books. The books shared with diverse cultures were interesting. I think we need to remember who we are representing in our community.

Inclusivity

Including books in our collection that represent the same demographics as our student body has been a mission of mine this year. It helped me to weed out a lot of material that had information and representations of cultures that are no longer appropriate in today's society.

While the challenge of collaborating with teachers is tough, it's one of the most rewarding things we can do. I barely scratch the surface at Swanson as the teachers are rarely giving students projects at our school that have space for this - worksheets, short quizzes, etc., rule. However, what little I have done has added value to those staff relationships I think are so important.

Collaboration

I think the four levels of collaboration are interesting and provide a road map.

Coordination - teachers and librarians know what the other is teaching

Cooperation - teachers and librarians work on a project or unit together, but the work is done individually

Integrated Instruction - teachers and librarians teach together

Integrated Curriculum - teachers and librarians work and plan together to create a product that enhances student learning by incorporating the different literacies with grade-level curricula.

After reading chapter 7 and listening to Stephanie's presentation about collaboration, I was remind of how some of our students come in with little social skills and need to be taught how to work with others. Also some of our students don't know how to be inclusive of others that are different. By having books that are inclusive, we can help students see into each other's lives and in turn help to teach them how to be inclusive.

All or nothing thinking

Sometimes when I read a book with school library topics I feel re-inspired to do everything! My mind makes grand plans, complicated units, lessons with too many skills, etc. However, every small step and improvement can be more powerful. Process over product.

Research

Providing support for teachers and students conducting research can mean supporting just a small part of the research process. It can be intimidating, but often we know of resources or skills that can help enhance research projects for classes. Janelle

The emphasis on access to books and the multiple literacies was reassuring. Most of this was reassuring of my job and what I can work towards. Inclusivitity, research, and collaboration. It was all good to revisit and be reminded.

Trying to make sure the library is a safe place for all students to work and read together. Teaching the skills to students that allow them to be inclusive of all classmates and students at our school. Supporting students that are having a hard time in this area.

I have found myself focusing on the wide variety of skills needed and our role in helping in lots of aspects. I think I am trying to wrap my head around all of the different ways that I can support teachers and students.
