Reason 1: "Relations between the Indians and the English remained tense, especially as the starving colonists took to raiding Indian food supplies." That is a quote from our textbook's second chapter, a blatant contradiction to what the colonists were instructed to do - "imploy some few of your company to trade with them for corn and all other... victuals." Raiding the Indians wasn't part of that.

Reason 2: "Firearms, for example, conferred enormous advantages on those who could purchase them from Europeans." Another textbook quote in stark contrast to the actual instructions, which stated to "never trust the country people with the carriage of their weapons". Legitimately letting the Indians purchase guns should've been out of the question.

Reason 3: The instructions state to choose a spot not "over burthened with woods" nor a "low or moist place" and yet the English ended up settling on, according to the textbook, "the wooded and malarial banks of the James River."

Reason 1: They had a terrible settlement placement. Jamestown was settled closer to the shore in brackish water with a swampy area and high population of natives. This is the complete opposite of what the instructions asked them to do, which was to go far up the river and settle in a high sitting area that was not well populated. It even explicitly stated not to "plant in a low or moist place, because it will prove unhealthful." and gave exact instructions on how to tell where not to land. They decided to land there anyway.

Reason 2: They were instructed to only spend a limited amount of time, men and resources on the search for gold or precious. The textbook states that "the woods rustled with game and rivers flopped with fish, but greenhorn settlers... wasted valuable time grubbing for nonexistent gold when they should have been gathering provisions." Everyone they had sent were self styled "gentleman" who did not want to engage in hard labor, and neglected performing it.
