I think including gender, sex, and sexual orientation in children's literature is essential. Why? Because including diversity allows it to be normalized and not seen as something strange or unusual. Also, as Greta said, children have the right to choose their identity. If our choices are not influenced by stereotypes, we will feel free and not judged by society and, in turn, we will be able to respect the others' choices.

Thanks for shearing! I was very moved by the poem and Elizabeth's interpretation.
It's a very sensitive issue and unfortunately it's still very current in our society. I agree with the comments of my classmates although I think that nowadays women are more organized and they are fighting together to try to generate changes. And I think that very little by little some achievements are being seen, although there is still a long way to go. This patriarchal society still blames women for the situations of violence they have to go through and that is sad. We have to keep working and fighting for our mothers, sisters, friends, colleagues and for those who are no longer in this world.

Also, I want to send a big hugh and all the strenght to Carla.

http://linoit.com/users/yamartinez3/canvases/The%20Middle%20Ages

We have selected two videos in which two different female artists, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj, tell how they have always been targeted because of their characters and the relation this has to their gender.

Taylor Swift has always been seen by the media as a resentful person only because she wrote songs about ex-fiancees, while Nicki Minaj is labeled as a ‘’slut’’ and a “gross” woman only because she raps about sex in some of her songs.

Of course singing about ex-finacess and rapping about sex is something than men usually do, but they are not targeted as ‘’sluts’’ nor “resentful”, they have a free pass and people listen to their lyrics without judging them. The thing is that people seem to care excessively when women do so.

In the first video, Taylor Swift talks about how a woman cannot react to something because society sees her as exaggerated and as if she is overreacting; meanwhile, when men do so, it’s perceived as normal, and the public also see them as strong people that are speaking their minds.

In the second video, Nicki Minaj, an outstanding female rapper with a strong character as well, explains that she is seen by the public eye as a threat to male rappers because she raps about sex. Men do so as well, but, for sure, women cannot do it because they’re ‘’gross’’. She talks about how people expect women to have certain attitudes to maintain their image while men can do whatever they want without being questioned by society.

Women, especially those who are in the public eye, are constantly judged and their privacy is almost never respected. They have to deal with all kinds of intrusions, such as people wanting to know who they are dating or what underwear they are wearing. Of course, no one dares to ask this kind of question to a male.

As it is expressed in the paper The Women of Beowulf: Power and Duty in Anglo-Saxon Society, the traditional view of the women (...) as weak, extraneous characters used only to pass mead and worry about their children is patently false. Women are intelligent, important, and strong and they have a lot to say and the right to be listened to without being judged.

Women do not have to please anyone nor fit a certain role in society, they have multiple intelligences and none of them are less than those of men.

Benitez, Maidana, Tcheichvilli.

I agree with most of the first impressions of my classmates about Beowulf.
I think the story may be about a male hero who, with a little help from his friends, fights against dangerous creatures which surely are destroying the peace of the town where the action takes place.
Regarding gender, looking at the pictures I can imagine the protagonist is a white heterosexual male. The portrayal of hero in the Middle Ages is characterized by bravery, audacity, strength and intelligence. In general, women in literature of this period have stereotyped roles such as being at home taking care of children, needing the protection of male heroes and/or being their love interests. I don't really think that there is diversity in Beowulf. All the characters are surely identified with binary genders and canonical sexual orientations.

Then, I used to take my mom's sewing box and do the same thing.

Regarding the first question, I agree with what my classmates have said. I also think that, in connection with reader-response theory, the fact that the books in the "choose your own adventure" saga are written in second-person narrator makes the reader really feel like the protagonist of the story, generating more intrigue and motivation to keep reading.

About the second question, I would like to mention the novel "Rayuela" by Julio Cortazar. In this case, although the reader does not make step-by-step decisions, he/she does have the possibility of choosing how to read the story, thus generating an active reader. I read this novel when I was younger but I believe it can be read in full, only one part and ignoring the rest and there is also an option of alternating chapters. Moreover, I remember that one of the chapters has two stories: one reading the even lines, and the other, the odd ones.

I think that a great idea for a retelling project would be a play. I believe students could be really motivated by this idea. They could choose which story to represent, create one, or maybe the teacher could propose some classic stories and the kids adapt one to our modern times.

In relationship with transtextuality, I would propose the song Pet Sematary by The Ramones. It was based on the book written by Stephen King and there is also a movie. I think this song would be a nice option to use in Halloween time and maybe, students could do a story of their own inspired on this story.
