It has always been a mystery why lentils can be counted, but rice cannot. It is the same in English as in Spanish.

In English, lentils are countable, but rice is not. So we have to count something else to talk about the quantity: grains of rice, bags of rice, kilos of rice, bowls of rice, etc.

First, keep in mind that countable things are many: they are anything that you can count with numbers and that has a plural form.

You can have one cat, two cats, and three cats - so cats are countable.

One cat, two cats, three cats.

Other things, however, are not easy to count. Water, air, wine, etc.
