I decided to engage with GMIL week by teaching a family member about an aspect of LIS, one of the ways recommended on MOLE. In Week 3, we learnt about the information universe and I thought this might be quite a fun topic to explain to a complete novice to the information world so I spent some time explaining about information horizons and going through examples of where she has searched for information previously to map out her different zones, in a similar way to the activity we did for the course. She left our conversation enlightened about her information seeking skills and about what information horizons are, meaning she would think carefully the next time she needed information about where she would go first to find it. - Nathan Lobo

I introduced my parents to the concept of 'information literacy', and taught them a few of the Google search tips that we looked at earlier in the semester to give them an idea of what it can mean in practice. They hadn't heard of Boolean operators, and thought that they might be useful in the future.

UCL students from this department discussed their dissertation projects which were based around information literacy.

While working in a public library on Saturday during Global MIL week, I was reminded how important the role of library staff is in supporting the public with their information literacy skills. An example of my work on that day included supporting a user to locate specific information on a local council's website. During this week, I signed and retweeted a link to a government petition to ring-fence public library funding in the UK.

I have also been celebrating some examples of information literacy teaching in my other workplace, an academic library, by liking tweets that promote them on Twitter. Examples include a 1-minute tutorial on using the new LibrarySearch interface created with iorad.com and the following video.

(Karen Butcher)
https://twitter.com/biblio_karen

Video: How to find your reading list books (Royal Holloway University of London)
