I've known Andy 21 years since I was 17. He was my tutor. I did a presentation on material failure relating to the Titanic. Only 12 years later did he tell me that I'd got it all wrong (turns out it was something to do with an iceberg, not material failure), but he enjoyed my presentation so he passed it at the time! :) I don't think for a minute he'd ever think I'd become his manager! Miss you Andy. Carl

Immediately after joining GIFHE as a progression coach in HE Business in September 2015, I got to know a regular visitor to our office. Andy (known affectionately as "Fridge") was a good friend to all of us in HE Business and certainly made me feel welcome after joining the organisation. He was full of humour and was simply one of the most familiar faces at the Institute. He was "part of the furniture" and will be sorely missed by us all.
Tim V.

I'll also never forget the look on his face when we returned in September, he gave me a huge grin, held out his hand and said look, I'm married now!!
I've known 'Fridge' for over 25 years and became good friends. He was the sort of person who would help anyone. He even helped my son with an engineering project before Christmas. Over the years I've shared an office with him, and even taught him when he did his Business degree. He had a great sense of humour and I will miss him.

I have many fond memories or working with Andy. In particular I always enjoyed our opportunities to making life a nightmare for whoever was running the unfair means or mit circs panel by taking nothing seriously until we’d wasted so much time we had too actually make a decision, we laughed a great deal and they always made the day more fun. When I left to do my PhD he even trying to convince me that I should continue to volunteer for panels so I didn’t miss out on the fun (and he didn’t have to do them with someone who took it seriously). I’ll miss that mischievous grin and the opportunity random conversations. Becca

Someone stopped me when I was out shopping at the weekend, 'Isn't it awful news about Andy? My lad is devastated - he's at college and Andy is his teacher - and his dad is in bits too - Andy used to teach him back in the day and helped him so much when he was struggling with the work'. There will be so many people feeling sad for his loss but remembering Andy's very positive impact on their lives. For me, I will remember his smile and cheery greetings - and how grumpy he'd get during quality audits 20 years ago! I'll also remember how truly happy he was that he'd married his soulmate last summer and my heart goes out to Carolyn. RIP Andy, a true GIFHE hero. Julie x
