My family has always been accepting of Asian culture and when I came to the family they wanted me to feel like I fit in so my mom would always make all of my favorite foods (mainly Chinese food). In that list would be my favorite Chinese dumplings. Later when I served my mission in Sendai, Japan I was asked a lot what my favorite food was and I would say dumplings (easy thing to say with my lack of Japanese). But, I was known as the missionary who loved eating dumplings. I've included a photo below, it is not of me, but of my companion as we were eating some dumplings in Japan. 

In China, one of the  symbols of the Chinese New Year is dumplings. It represents the crescent moon and it will bring good fortune to the new year. 

Dumplings represent the ties I have with my roots and the connection that all Asian countries have with each other. It amazes me that while Asians are all very different, there is a tie with their love and variation of the dumpling. 

The cultural significance of this item is to unit people and to connect families. I have many memories in various settings: growing up wrapping dumplings with my family, wrapping dumplings at Chinese camp, teaching Japanese members how to make Chinese dumplings on my mission, and wrapping cream cheese wantons with my in-laws. I have accumulated a collection over the years, but most of them are drugstore brands. Most of the "name" brands I own are gifts from friends and family. It's acceptable for me to wear my nails painted, especially with glitter and shades of pink (or, red if you're a painter), because I am a ciswoman. Seeing the brands that I carry, one might come to the conclusion that my socioeconomic status is lower than other white women.

Along with not only being a woman, but being white, it is acceptable to wear makeup and conceal any imperfections I (or others) might see. I don't care so much about presenting for others because my mother didn't socialize me with the belief that I have to wear makeup. I believe another part of my socialization comes from very limited interaction with social media until I was in my later years of high school. However, when I did start to take an interest in makeup, I had a large selection of lighter tones to choose from for concealer. My skin tone is "the norm" and desired in our culture because it is light. The darker concealers are very limited with this specific concealer stick, which, again, is a drugstore brand which means I have the ability to pay less for a concealer (due to selection size) regardless of my/my family's income.

One of my friends refers to me as neurodivergent when speaking about the way my thinking works compared to hers. Sometimes it feels like my success depends upon my ability to mask the quirks in my thinking and mannerisms because otherwise I will be judged as lazy or cowardly. We're taught that success is an individualistic goal that is obtained through working hard in the systems in place. 

The weighted blanket also helps with my nerves. I'm reluctant to say "anxiety" because I do not have a formal diagnosis for that, but I do feel safe and calm under it when I'm feeling restless or having an "episode". It's not an obvious tell about my neurodiversity, and because it's hidden in my bedroom I am able to blend in with the greater collective who do not (or at least say they do not) experience the same pattern of thinking that I do.

Anyone who knows laptops knows that their lifespan clocks out around four years of use, maybe less maybe more depending on its utility and care.
I picked this because despite its age, I have not replaced it. Access to technology and the Internet is needed to function adequately for work and school (especially now). One might take my laptop and watch it die after unplugging it for 5 minutes, only to wonder why it hasn't been fixed. When money is tight and has always been tight, people learn to squeeze out whatever utility they can get from a thing before it absolutely cannot be used any longer. I'm very fortunate to have a nice laptop. Chromebooks are an option, but that can feel like a waste when the laptop still (barely) function. I think MacBooks are culturally seen as a sign of wealth, so the fact that mine is an HP might signal to someone else that I am not of the socioeconomic status to afford something like a MacBook.

They give me a since of security like a good luck charm or something. The day I have my own kids (girls) I want to pierce their ears like me. I was so shocked when I was on my mission and the sister missionaries were talking about getting their ears pierced at 8 yrs old, 15 yrs old, and they having to make that decision. That was weird to me because for our family having your ears pierced is not a decision you can make (at least for the girls). It is something it is decided for you since the day you are born.

My extended family always categorized us as “weird” or “different” but in the church culture I am “normal”. The harshness in which these scriptures were treated, the stickers inside, and the messy markings are evidence of a child who participated in the church because it was the norm for my household. As much as I love these scriptures, they represent the period in my life where I was blindly faithful. Participation in church was for show, to appease my parents. After high school, I underwent my own conversion process, and I now hold the doctrine of the Gospel very close to my heart. The most important thing these scriptures remind me of is the difference between living the Gospel of Christ and living church culture. Understanding spirituality is separate from church culture, I can focus on being Christlike toward my students. We are held to a much higher standard of maturity than oldest sons. The way I behave as a woman is largely due to gender roles that are prevalent in our society.  These roles include motherhood, nurturing, and carrying the mental load.  Still, I hold stock in these roles, and while some of them aren’t inherently bad (I want to be a mom and nurturer), the fact that they were placed on me as early as eight years old speaks to how society views women. As a teacher, I think I will be more empathetic to students who have a lot of responsibility at home. This iPad being a secondary technological source for me reflects the socioeconomic status of my husband and I, that we can afford something (albeit, he has been saving and budgeting for it) so expensive and that I do not need to use it daily, the way many people may need to. In Teaching Multicultural Education and the Gospel of Jesus Christ it was discussed how our social position and status of privilege in society contribute to intellectual deficiencies. The financial ability I have to own an iPad in general reflects societal privilege, and could explain certain academic advantages I possess. The largest wedding photo my husband and I have, however, is this one—where the Boston Temple (where we were married) is clearly the main subject of the photo, and my husband and I are very small in the front. This focus on the temple reveals my religious identity as well as my strong identity as a Bostonian. By displaying this image in our house so proudly, we are sending a strong message regarding the pride we have for these items and the identities they convey. It is also worth noting that we can do so since these items are culturally acceptable for them to be displayed in such a manner. Positionality puts our experience in relation to the experience of others and explains why there are differences. My view on being married in a temple means I believe I am married for all of eternity and puts even more stress on prioritizing and strengthening my marital relationship. I wear these shirts often, and often in situations where I, as a woman, are expected to be dressed perhaps more femininely. The over-sized nature of the shirts make me feel more comfortable as the focus is on the animal, rather than my body. My identity as a female is often represented in the clothes I wear, but my desire to dress how I prefer (in a large part thanks to societal pressures of beauty standards and how my body ‘should’ look) pushes me to buy more and wear more of these specific shirts, that also express my love for Yellowstone National Park and the native wildlife to this country. I see clothes first as a means for comfort and versatility rather than appearance. How immature of me to think that. Society makes us think that a gender has to be assigned a certain color and the color defines who we are. But that is not true, we are allowed to like any color we want no matter our gender. I think Pink is amazing but not because I’m a girl, but because that is just what I like. When people get to know me, they know at first glance that I love pink and that is who I am. Color is a culture, you can make the color you like your own culture.

These have come in many forms over the years. Chess has been a long-lasting example of this. This chess clock is the personal clock that I brought with me to club meetings and tournaments when I was very seriously invested in that community. As time has moved forward, I have found less time to devote to chess, but have instead devoted that into other games and game types, usually strategy games. One element commonly found across games that I have played is that there tends to be a decent cost to get involved at a competitive level. With chess, I purchased my own clock, several boards and sets, membership into groups, tournament fees, etc. Now that I spend far more time on the computer and more of my gaming has been digital, the costs are instead for an expensive computer, a good mouse, and other such equipment. Though these expenses may not always break the bank, they do represent that I was raised in an environment of financial privilege where I was allowed to pursue hobbies that could lead to expensive costs down the road. The culture I was raised in heavily stressed that I serve a full-time mission. This emphasis came from both parents having served missions and from the community in general of the Church that pushed for this as a goal in my life. Because of how strong the pressure was in the culture I was in during my youth, there was little question on whether or not I would serve when the time came. When I was a teenager, I honestly wasn't sure if that was what I was really wanting for myself, but serving a mission was what my culture expected of me. Looking at the many letters in this book and reflecting on the journey I underwent, this decision was incredibly important for me to become the person I am today and to get the testimony I currently have. However, these experiences also show me the power and influence that society and our unique culture has on us and how it can pressure us into making decisions or doing things that we aren't sure about, even if they are for our benefit in the long run. Overall, this shows that I am blessed to be able to pursue my passions and dreams by developing my talents and hobbies and paying to further my education. I have the time and means to become good enough at this passion to do well in it. This bookshelf indicates that I have a lot of helpful tools around me. I was able to take my car to the store, I had the money to purchase my bookshelf, and I had the tools readily available to put it together. I also had been taught the skills previously from others with more experience so that I could be successful in putting this together. It also shows that I have plenty of books and other items in my possession that I would need a bookshelf. I am very privileged in the access I have to information and other people that are willing and qualified to help me learn new skills.
