I've always taken my non-disabled status for granted and never really thought much about how society affects disabled people differently, including the different social norms and messaging they receive. I'd also like to learn more about how being in a nuclear family affects my life differently that people in non-nuclear families.

What identities have the strongest effect on how you see yourself as a person?

Sex, Age, Primary Language, Economic Class, Ethnicity

Is there any identity group you would add?

College Student, Transgender

Which identity do you have the strongest connection to how you see yourself? Discuss. Is this identity stable? In other words, are there some times when one identity is more salient than at other times? If you are comfortable, explain.

I have the strongest connection to my ethnicity, as many aspects of my life, both positive and negative, are tied to it. This primarily relates to my family (how my parents raised me, how they interact with me, etc), but also relates to my preferred foods (fried rice #1 ik its more of an american-chinese food). Sometimes my sex also seems most important to me.

Which identities do you usually draw strength or pride from? Explain.

I don't really have a definitive identity I draw strength from or that I'm proud of, but I usually think about my sex when thinking about positive things about myself.

Which identities would you like to learn more about? Discuss.

I'd like to learn more about ability status, as it's something that greatly impacts certain people, and that society creates a lot of norms about yet rarely talks about.

Describe your experience with socialization related to any one identity.

When I was young, my parents generally persuaded me to make practically exclusive Chinese friends, saying I would be better able to relate to them. So much of my life I grew up around people of similar experiences. However when I grew older, I realized that this almost exclusive socialization was not healthy for me, as it really confined my perspective and opinions of several things along Chinese cultural norms.

Do any of your identities make your feel unsafe or vulnerable? Explain.

My identity as transgender generally makes me feel vulnerable. My family generally does not support it (they know about it, but ignore it), so I generally don't share much about my life with my family.

As you reflected on your identities, were there any identity categories that you wish had been included that were not? What are they?

No
