I would like to establish my career in school counseling in a program designed for younger students, elementary or middle school perhaps. My vision for my future in school counseling is that all of my students will learn how to use the tools I will provide for them so they can achieve they’re highest academic, social, and emotional goals. Core beliefs such as empathy, respect, compassion, and trust are crucial to making this vision come to life, as they are key components to creating a healthy and strong relationship with your students. It is important for them to always feel welcomed, safe, and heard when coming to us for the proper guidance, and never let them feel like they are alone or misjudged. My personal philosophy is that all students are unique individuals, and that when they are given a safe environment with an advocate by their side, the students will be able to reach their full potential and attain a successful and fulfilling future.

After taking the competency assessment for counselors I realized a couple things about myself. Although I feel that my personal development has been well, I am eager to learn more about my career as I get further into it. I feel extremely confident in my career knowledge so far and I’m sure that will only increase as I take more courses and earn my degree’s.
The services that I will be providing for my students in social, emotional, academic and career aspects are definitely something that I feel strongly about providing, I believe in my ethical decision making to help provide them with the correct support they need. When it comes to my professional dispositions and behaviors, that will be something I need to improve on simply for the fact that I lack a certain amount of experience needed to feel completely comfortable in that role. I am aware of the importance of consultations and collaborating between counselors and teachers, however it is something that I feel like I could build up on over time. (Chloewa et al., 2018). Consultations help facilitate training or workshops for families, administrators, teachers, or other stakeholders to share school counseling expertise (B-SS 5). Being able to confidently create safe group settings is crucial in all counseling, but especially school counseling when dealing with teachers and even in some cases other adults such as parents or guardians. Most of the parts that I felt I was lacking is due to my inexperience, and being so early on in this career path. After reading the data examples about how to identify your students’ achievements, discipline, attendance, and opportunities I feel less confident in that area of observation simply due to my inexperience in the counseling field. Although my knowledge is limited because of how early into the courses we are luckily, I am consistently retaining new information to train me in skills that I can start applying in my current life and in my future career path to help strengthen those areas.
I have been able to recognize the importance of my training and skill sets that we are learning, I know where I need to further my education and where I feel like my weaker spots are that I should be prioritizing when it comes to myself work. I am looking forward to learning more strategies and techniques that I will use in my future career opportunities so that I can make positive changes as a counselor.

The article that I chose focuses on how school counselors have taken on the role of the anti-bully specialists in their jobs as well as the usual typical responsibilities. This is important to me because it was about the state that I grew up in, and its main piece of evidence that was used is the New Jersey anti-bullying laws that were established in 2011. This proves the positive affect counselors have on their students because it discusses how crucial school counselors are and the multiple roles that play into the job itself. Seven themes derived from the study: (a) school counselor role, (b) anti-bullying specialist role, (c) counseling relationship, (d) school counselor versus anti-bullying specialist role, (e) graduate school counseling training preparation for the school counselor and anti-bullying specialist roles, (f) Rogerian approach in school counselor and anti-bullying specialist roles, and (g) suggestions for the future in respect to the anti-bullying specialist role. (Hu, 2011). These findings created a deeper look into how all of these additional attributes to the counselor’s jobs have greatly impacted the relationships they have with their students. Those who participated in the study that was discussed in this article reported having more effective counseling relationships with their students and a deeper sense of trust between them as well. Having these dual relationships with the students as their advocates, mediators, consultants, and counselors opens more doors to creating connections and being able to empower these students in more than just academic fields of life. Reading this article was not only informative for me but enlightening as well. Being a born and raised New Jersey girl seeing the depth of the anit-bullying laws that were put in place and how they have given people in our field guidelines to follow and a clear message to send out is inspirational. Our roles as counselors are always going to be more than meets the eye, the work is tremendous, individualized, unique, and rewarding all at the same time.

Although the test results did not shock me, they did present areas which I need to improve upon. I have definitely shared most of my real life experience with younger people, therefore I havent had much room to grow more of an attachment to the older generations. This is definitely something I wish to improve on because although I will be counseling younger students, there is more to counseling then just that relationship. I hope to strengthen my skills so that I can adequately communicate with people of any age, especially if my co-workers, bosses, and other third parties such as students parents are a part of the older crowd. I would never treat anyone differently or discriminate, I want to be able to connect with and provide everyone with the support they need regardless of their age group.

This test is one that definitely had my mind spinning a little bit after reading the results. At the end of the day, I know that I treat and feel equally about everyone no matter what their sexual preference, orientation, or sexuality is. I have three extremely close people in my life who are gay and it's not something that I even have to think differently about. This is an important test because I feel especially in this current modern era sexuality is the biggest topic of challenge among adolescents. Thankfully, the times of people being uncomfortable or ashamed are over and I want to be apart of this continuous encouragement for everyone to be themselves and be with whom ever makes them their happiest. I found it interesting to read the results simply from a scientific point of view for how our brains associate specific words to each other, however I know I always have and always will continue to treat everyone the same no matter who they are or who they want to spend their lives with.
