Case Study Part 2: Vietnam has been attracting foreign investors to set up their companies. However, one of the main struggles that foreign investors face is the language barrier. In Sasha’s third year, her company recognised her prior experience working with partners from Vietnam and her ability to lead a team. Sasha’s company decided to give her the opportunity to be stationed in Vietnam for two years to lead a team to explore how they can modify their existing tools to help the locals harness technology to learn English. Sasha felt that this would be a good opportunity for the company to expand and for her team to help solve the struggle that foreign investors are currently facing in Vietnam. Sasha would be given additional overseas allowance and accommodation for the two years and possibly a promotion if she could manage the project well. Aware that this is a male-dominated industry, Sasha was glad that her abilities were recognised and she was given this opportunity to lead. While this is an excellent opportunity for her to progress in her career, Sasha is still unsure if she wants to leave her family and friends.

Firstly, i would try to take up freelancing jobs so that i can work at home online while taking care of my mother. This way, i can earn a little income to help support my mom while developing more skills. I would also search online for skills that matched my passion. After she recovered, i would try for a full time job so that i can have a higher salary.

We would do the same as Sasha. If Sasha could not find a job, being a delivery rider allows her to earn an income to support her family, and also learn how to interact with others. Freelancing would allow her to have the flexibility to take care of her mom, but she needed a much stable income, so applying for the job was not a bad choice after all. She also can get promoted if she does well for the job.

If i were Sasha, I’d make the same decisions as her, like her decision to work as a food delivery person. This would secure me at least some money as capital to start my freelance job as an app developer with my degree in computer science. While i would want to eventually secure a full time job, the work experience as a freelance app developer would look promising to an company that dabbles in app development, especially if the apps i made were both successful and interesting. The only thing I’d change would be that i would use the capital i made from food delivery, segregate it into 3 sections: For my family, For My Freelance job, and for investing. Id invest the section i saved into stocks that aren’t affected or fuelled by the pandemic, such as Pfizer, the vaccine company. Ship-building companies, because ships still deliver cargo and packages if airplanes are not in service. Cybersecurity companies, since people are always seeking security online. This is a way to secure a somewhat growing amount of “income” in case my application to a job gets rejected.

I would have done the same thing that she did. You have to seize opportunities when they present themselves and I think she made a smart decision to do food delivery. It was also smart of her to become a freelance app developer as she can work on multiple projects in demand in Asia, gaining experience, building connections and generating some cash flow. The skills that she picked up from working as a freelancer helped her secure a full time job when the pandemic started to slow down.

Sasha did what we would have done. Since she could not find a job due to not having work experience, she worked as a delivery driver which made her pick up some soft skills. When she realised that this would not be sustainable for the long term, she picked up some freelance gigs for her to take care of her mum at home while working at the same time. Once she got the relevant work experience needed to get a job, she applied and got the job when the pandemic was not as bad as before.
