Vaping is intended to be used by adults as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes. Unfortunately, a large majority of the consumers are minors. This is due to many things such as intentional youth targeting and vendors who do not ID their customers. Although it isn't possible to prove youth targeting, it is still blatantly obvious that flavors such as cotton candy and fruit slushie aren't what chain smoking adults are looking for. They are looking for the closest thing to a cigarettes taste, feel and smell and fruity flavors just don't satisfy that need. Also, the vendors who don't ID are careless people who know that they can rely on addicted minors for their income.

In terms of laws concerning E-Cigarettes, there isn't any besides being 18 years or older to purchase. Another thing to consider is that there isn't any health regulations on them yet. This means that companies can put whatever they want in the juice and they do considering that most juices kids are vaping contain 50 mg of nicotine but 2 years ago the highest nicotine level was 12 mg.

For my activism, I created a poster that highlighted the main negative side effects of vaping. Those include chronic cough, popcorn lung, and addiction. This poster was hung up all around the school in areas of high traffic to ensure that it would catch the eye of many people.

How You Can Help

Firstly, you can help by not being a part of the issue if you find yourself in that situation. Another effective way of helping resolve this issue is by confront anyone you know that vapes and probably shouldn't be. Being confronted about something like this will help them realize what they are doing to their body. If they hear the same thing from a higher authority such as a parent or teacher, they are more likely to disregard it but coming from a peer will mean something to them. Lastly, participating in protests or voting on issues like this could make the difference between this problem escalating or dwindling.

Thanks to Janine Sanger, a professional on various topics concerning drug use, I was able to gather very useful information to complete my activism project. She has access to statistics and studies such as a medical study being pursued at Harvard by several students and national polls regarding this topic. The Harvard study revealed that certain flavors are actually releasing a carcinogenic chemical known as formaldehyde and the national poll stated that roughly 1/4 of highschool students use e-cigarettes. This poll is certainly skewed because a majority of the kids under 18 won't admit to doing something they know is illegal.
