He does this by making jokes and laughing with them as a choice of encouragement at first. The next thing he would do is talk to him earnestly to them and try to persuade them with words. If all those things didn't work, he would yell and get angry with didn't happen very often. I think this leadership style works within the village because laughing and makings jokes makes them feel more like a friend than a worker. His leadership is similar to "The Boss" because they both are encouraging the others. The Boss was appointed to be leader, while Salva was not. The other kids just ended up following. They both tried not to yell but did at a few points. They tried to be as polite as possible.

The Lost Boys.
That was what they were being called in America—the boys who had lost their homes and families because of the war and had wandered, lost, for weeks or months at a time before reaching the refugee camps.

The "Lost Boys" were what people called the kids who had to flee from the war and lost their families, Salva one of them. I would feel grateful to live in better conditions, but I would still be reluctant, as I would have to leave all of my younger life behind.
