Rationale For Using This Book

Many students may look at art as something they cannot do. You may even hear the occasional, "I can't draw." or "I'm not an artist." The Dot puts a positive spin on that. This book does a really nice job of showing students that anyone can be an artist and that art can start with anything. This book is also simple to read and follow along. The illustrations to help the reader to easily follow along with the story by providing visuals to show what is happening in the book. The author shows how a little motivation from to teacher helped spark creativity in Vashti. Simply saying, "Just make a mark and see where it takes you" was enough to push Vashti to no longer stare blankly at her white piece of paper. The teacher's motivation in Vashti lead to Vashti motivating a little boy the same way.
I would begin a unit about creating or trying with this book. This unit could include hands-on art activities, like shown throughout this book, as well as writing activities. This book is appropriate in motivating students to try and see where it takes them. It could help students to look past the " I can't do it" mentality and to at least try and start. This lesson allows students to see what they can create when they try. Trying can lead to big creations. This book can also help to promote students to help each other in sparking some kind of motivation, which would encourage a positive atmosphere and a sense of community in the classroom. Encouraging students to start and try to create not only benefits in the Arts, but also in everything else. It is useful in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics too.
