Skarbeck's most celebrated act was the rescue of Resistance leader Francis Cammaerts. He was imprisoned by the Gestapo. Skarbeck went to the prison and starting singing "Frankie and Johnny" an American blues ballad to find where Cammaerts was. When he started singing along she convinced the Gestapo that she was his wife and contacted him in the prison. Then she identified herself as a British agent and demanded that they negotiate the release of Cammaerts. He was for free 2 million Francs which the SOE dropped off by parachute the next day.

Five months after the war ended her salary from the SOE ran out. She worked as a housekeeper and a switchboard operator.

In 1951 she got a job as a stewardess on a ship. A bathroom attendant, George Muldowney, became her friend while they were on the ship. Once they got back in London, he became obsessed with her and began to track her communications and movements. On June 15,1952, Skarbeck had a trip with Andrzej Koweski, a man she met in Budapest. This was the first time they contacted each other after many years. As she was loading her trunk, Muldowney confronted her and ask how long she would be. Skarbeck said roughly two years and he stabbed her in the chest and killed her. Maldowney went to prison and Skarbeck was buried at the London's St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery.
