South America is merely a geographic entity. It just describes the lower half of the Americas. However, the concept of Latin America is a cultural entity. The countries in Latin America all speaks the latin(or romance) languages, such as French, Spanish, and Portuguese. For example, The citizens of Mexico speaks Spanish, the citizens of Brazil speaks Portuguese, and the citizens of French Giana speaks French. So, the language spoken can be seen as a common factor in Latin America.
