Does standards-based learning have you feeling less creative? Do you stay up at night thinking you're not meeting the needs of all of your students?? UDL to the rescue! UDL is NOT a new initiative, but a framework. The goal is for all students to both learn content and demonstrate their understanding of a standard by personalizing their learning through choices. You get to be creative AND students feel successful! 😊

Manisha: UDL is a mindset for designing learning experiences for all learners by changing the curriculum, not the student. It seeks to maximize curriculum access to all learners by reducing curriculum barriers while maintaining high standards of achievement. It understands that learning is not a one-size-fits-all proposition and believes that all learners can gain skills, knowledge and enthusiasm for learning. UDL accounts for variability and context in the learner and the learning environment .

Every child deserves to feel valued and seen in the classroom! Universal Design for Learning (UDL) encourages teachers to collaborate to create classrooms that are accessible to all learners by providing access to multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression. When designing learning experiences, teachers consider what, how and why students are learning and how to remove barriers to learning.

Let's say it's dinner time. Alex wants pizza, Sam wants sushi, and Amber wants BBQ chicken nachos. Alex is allergic to sushi and Sam hates cheese. How are we going to eat?

If we go to a buffet, we can all eat and be satisfied with our meals.

A buffet let's you eat YOUR way.
Just like UDL let's you learn YOUR way.

Students can choose how they access the curriculum and choose how they show what they've learned. This creates an environment in which students are empowered in their own learning.

Our palettes are as unique as our learners. No matter the barrier, we are all able to maximize our diverse needs using the UDL framework.

UDL and the Restaurant Analogy

Would you rather go to a restaurant with one fixed menu, only being able to choose from one appetizer, one entree, and one dessert? Or would you rather go to a buffet where you have all kinds of delicious options?

UDL is a framework that supports students in becoming active participants in their learning. By pairing down goals to focus on core learning outcomes, providing choices in engagement (or how students engage with the learning material) and choices for expression (or how students can show that they met the learning goal), students learn to take ownership of their learning!
