When he was in the hospital and his brothers came to see him “‘There are some people here to see you. Claim to be your brothers or something.’ I leaped up and ran for the door, but it was already open and Soda had me in a bear hug and swinging me around. I was so glad to see him I would’ve bawled. Finally he set me down and looked at me. He pushed my hair back. "Oh, Ponyboy, your hair... your tuff, tuff hair…” (83).  It shows how much Soda loves his kid brother. Although it doesn’t seem like Darry loved Ponyboy, S.E Hinton incorporated that Darry really did love him, he just didn’t know how to show it, “[Darry] swallowed and said in a husky voice. ‘Ponyboy,’ I let go of Soda and stood there for a minute. Darry didn't like me... he had driven me away that night... he had hit me... Darry hollered at me all the time... he didn't give a hang about me.... Suddenly I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying. He didn't make a sound, but tears were running down his cheeks. I hadn't seen him cry in years, not even when Mom and Dad had been killed."Darry!" I screamed, and the next thing I knew I had him around the waist and was squeezing the daylights out of him. "Darry," I said, "I'm sorry..." He was stroking my hair and I could hear the sobs racking him as he fought to keep back the tears. "Oh, Pony, I thought we'd lost you... like we did Mom and Dad..."(84). The thought of losing his brother sent him into a panicky mode. The not crying Darry started crying, which horrified Ponyboy.

As said in the text, “I used to make A's in English, mostly because my teacher made us do compositions
all the time. I mean, I know I don't talk good English (Have you ever seen a hood that did?), but I can write it good when I try”(144). Ponyboy makes good grades in English when he tries to. According to the book, “Soda, who, sixteen-going-on-seventeen, never cracks a book at all, and my oldest brother, Darrel, who we call Darry, works too long and hard to be interested in
a story or drawing a picture, so I'm not like them. And nobody in our gang digs movies and books the way I do. For a while there, I thought I was the only person in the world that did. So I loned it” (3). No-one in Pony’s gang really liked book as a passion. Pony liked to read and watch movies alone.

He is constantly endanger of being put in a boys home. Like said in the text “"That's what's worrying me. If the judge decides Darry isn't a good guardian or something, I'm liable to get stuck in a home somewhere”(140) He can sometimes quickly jump to conclusions. Like, “A panic was rising in me as I listened to Johnny's quiet voice go on and on. "Johnny!" I nearly screamed. "What are we gonna do? They put you in the electric chair for, killing people!"” (50) Without thinking, Pony jumped to a conclusion that they would put Johnny in a electric chair, under panic.

At the beginning of the book, he they socs were very terrifying to him. Then, during the middle of the book when Johnny killed the Soc by the fountain Pony was starting to see what type of people the socs really were. Also, when seeing Cherry Valance, she explained that the Soc life wasn’t exactly the life everyone thought it was “Things were rough all over, alright.” Explaining how not just Greasers have things rough even the Socs do. Then, at the end of the book, he started to see everything in a new perspective. Especially since Johnny and Dally died. These are Ponyboy’s strengths, motivations and flaws.
