Summary :

It all started with our main character, Alice. A young and attentive girl living in an Catholic orphanage, in the corners of the city of Troy, New York. She had been living with eighteen "Sisters" and seven nuns (Sister Vincent de Paul, Sister Issac Jogues, Sister Francis de Sales, Sister Francis of Assisi, Sister John Bosco, Sister Francis Xavier, and Sister John Vianney). From the first page, we see that Alice was up early in the morning, baking with one of the nuns, "Sister Vincent de Paul". It had been snowing and raining at the same time that day. Whilst baking, a fire started in the kitchen and both of them scrambled, with Sister Vincent de Paul trying to calm the fire down and Alice running down the hallway-trying to wake all her "Sisters" up and run out of the house. In the following pages, we see that two other nuns were just coming back from their walk, only to come back to the orphanage, burning down from the fierce fire that had started to grow even more. As we flipped through the pages, Alice and the other nuns as well as the children had gathered downstairs in the main hall, scared and tired, they had no vehicle nor were there any houses nearby that could help them, and so Alice suggested the boathouse near them, and so they did. Though, before the conversation could escalate, the fire had reached down to the main floor. Before they knew it, one of the nuns veils was caught on fire and as the rest of the nuns tried helping them, the children scurried out of the orphanage. As the story continues, we learn that after the nuns had followed the children out of the orphanage, they had a fight with each other, with some of the nuns wanting to run back to the chapel and one of them shouting angrily at them to not go there.

Moral of the story : Be careful when baking with kids, they can be quite handful when in the kitchen and it could cause some real danger when they don't know the dangers that are living within the kitchen.

Continuation from Page 14 - 18

Summary :

Continuing from day 1, after the freak accident, all of them had finally arrived at the boathouse, the children and some of the nuns had stayed behind at the boathouse while Sister Francis de Sales and Sister Ike drove the icy roads in the Dodge Dart. It was late morning by the time the nuns and the girls left, finally getting help from the milk man who drove them with his truck to Fifth Avenue in Troy, New York. The next day came and the nuns, in a hurry went back to their regular schedule. The children and the nuns had come back to their orphanage (presumably, though). Alice had asked the nuns whether Sister Vincent de Paul was alright, considering the fire that had caught up to her veil. Whilst asking Sister John Bosco about the conditions of Sister Vincent de Paul, the nun had brought up about the Harrigans again to Alice and their wants to adopt Alice. Secretly, Alice had bribed with God in her prayer, a bribe that goes along with "If Sister Vincent de Paul feels better soon, then I'll consider hitching up on the Harrigans."

Moral of the story : Even when life gets hard, remember to do your duties.

Page 19-30 (Continuation from chapter one to chapter two on the same day, basically from day 2 to day 3)

Summary :

We continued off from Alice's bribe to God, and afterwards, we see that the nuns had decided on taking in some of the girls to practice their parts for a student production of the musical comedy "My Fair Lady" . The orphanage had collaborated with another orphan-but boys instead of girls. After a long time of practice, Alice had been sent to send the drama sheets back to the man (Father Laverty) who had provided Alice's orphanage the sheets (the man is basically working in the orphanage that had collaborated with Alice's orphanage.). Alice had to travel far to the man's orphanage, hopping on a bus, she had met with a guy who was in his college years and he helped Alice on the route to the orphanage. After giving Father Laverty the sheets, he helped Alice by driving her back to her orphanage. We end off with Alice coming back and about to have dinner with the others, before Naomi Matthews comes up to her and starts a conversation with her, we see that the Harrigans who had wanted to adopt Alice, was now rethinking about their choice and reconsidering about Naomi Matthews instead.

Moral of the story :

Be careful when driving

Summary :

The chapter introduces us to Miami, a young girl who lives with her family, the Shawn's. We are told that Miami is having her birthday coming, for the next few pages, we are introduced to Garth, Miami's little brother and Ms. Shaw, the three of them were having a talk on how "Boys weren't invited" "What Miami isn't allowed to wear on the birthday party" And about their moral rules that had been set up for the whole family. We learn that Ms. Shaw and Mr. Shaw had adopted four children which are Miami, Garth, Rachelle and Fanny. We learn that Miami is eleven-going-on-twelve, Garth is possibly two years younger than Miami while Fanny and Rachelle were their baby sisters. Miami, after having an argument with Ms. Shaw, had gone up to the "Relief Tower".

Moral of the story : Don't judge other's just because of their skin colors.

Summary :

We continue off with Miami sitting in the "Alone room" which had been in the attic, she had thought of multiple things and imagined a bunch of things as to what might happen if she climbed onto the roof top, and as she leaned on the windowsill, she had also imagine as to what would happen later on if she fell, what her families reaction would be and what her final words would be. Back to reality, her neighbor, Ms. Jenkins-was obsessed with her yard and all her precious flowers.
