Remote learning makes for a not so ideal teaching and learning situation.  As teachers we are missing the instant feedback that you we from a students facial reaction or body language.  The dialogue that we have in our classrooms has turned into a monologue...yet you were able to reflect on your tension and bring the energy back!  Good for you!

Why shouldn't they be given opportunities to be a leader? Why are they the ones that are left out? You won't have it. You are committed to developing those capacities within them beyond the traditional definitions of what "leaders" typically look like for primary teachers. Your students are lucky to have a teacher that will advocate and give them the many opportunities that we very well know that many would not. You recognize that every one of your students have the ability to soar as a leader - whether they are the compliant or the rebellious ones in our class - a powerful realization for many. I resonate a lot with you in the sense that I believe that many students have the abilities, but just need those guiding people in their lives to give them the repertoire of tools and the language to be successful in whatever realm of learning they are taking part in. So excited about the journey you are having and I can't wait to see how the many activities that you have planned will pan out!

You engaged in some really deep reflection about you, about dance, and about the students that you work with. I think that as teaching is such a relational profession, it becomes so easy to let the instances in our work affect our day-to-day lives and to allow those to take over the space in our hearts that is filled with motivation to move forward with our profession. I, too, have been in a position where I felt that things had to change. I notice your courage and see that you were determined to make something change - but not just in your students, but in you as well. Like I said to you during your presentation: you found your way to develop trust with all your students and I am so happy that you were able to open up dialogue with some of the boys that were part of the tension in your dance class. You trusted them with a gift. You gifted them an offering to reconcile, an offering to listen wholeheartedly and they did not take advantage of that trust as they accepted. So happy that you were able to feel a positive change after being vulnerable and trusting with your students. I'm eager to see if your paths will cross again in another class some day... now THAT would be the ultimate sense of fulfillment and validation.

Connecting parents to their child's learning journey through simple, manageable activities has so much power.  Parents often don't know where to begin supporting their child, especially during the middle school/high school years, and so  giving them this opportunity to be involved and guiding them through the process is a beautiful thing.  I also think I'll start using, "I can" statements more often in  my class, we are always our worst critic and so that reminder of all the things we can do has so much power!
