After showing the people of Rome that he was a power hungry and greed motivated ruler, citizens of Rome revolved against Nero. He was overthrown and hunted as a fugitive by his own personal body guards, and once he was cornered and certain to die, he took his death into his own hands. Nero slit his own throat with a knife, ending his reign in a dramatic manner suitable to his egoistic personality.

Nero, stepson of Claudius, was not favored to inherit the throne of Rome until Nero's mother convinced Claudius otherwise. Nero would reign over Claudius' biological son. Shortly after Nero was set as the heir, Claudius was poisoned by a mushroom and died. Nero and his mother Agrippina stepped to the throne. After his stepfather’s convenient death, Nero became the fifth Roman empire. In the beginning of his reign, Nero acted for the benefit of his people. He reduced taxes, banned capital punishment, and banned contests that involved bloodshed. Nero was passionate about the arts, and this passion helped to further enhance Roman society and culture. Although Nero primarily provided for Rome, his motives as a ruler changed. Nero became immoral. culture. The beginning portion of his ruling can be characterized as stable and philanthropic. However, Agrippina did not wish to share the power with her son. She largely dominated him and his actions, and it is believed that Nero had her killed as a result. The murder of his own mother may have been a main contributor to Nero’s later ruling habits. Nero became immoral and greedy. It is believed that he had a desire to destroy the city in order to make room for his grand palace. This theory was born when Nero was spotted playing a lyre amongst the flames; celebrating the downfall of the city he was assigned to protect. After the fire, Nero had an elaborate palace built by slave laborers. His palace was perceived as overly ostentatious, and as a result of his greedy demeanor, his people turned against him. Nero was overthrown by the people of Rome and betrayed by his own bodyguards. His guards chased him as if he were a fugitive, and they ultimately captured him. In order to maintain his legacy as a dramatic and avaricious leader, Nero took his death into his own hands. He slit his own throat, ending his thirteen year reign in 68 AD.
