There was mainly refinement, propriety, restraint, and sexual prudishness in the century. The middle classes were larger and more dominant in society. Queen Victoria, who ruled Great Britain for much of the 19th century, was widowed quite early and never remarried, and her behavior, and dress set England's culture for most of the century. Facts and stories were produced to show that the life of a worker in the 19th century was difficult.

The middle class had skilled workers, such as managers, clerks, and etc, they had the money they needed to survive, and had money left over for other leisure goods. This extra money allowed them to live comfortably. Most moved away from the cities because slums were seen as unhygienic and unpleasant. This led to the beginning of suburbs. However, the people living in industrialised areas lived in terrible conditions because of the lack of money and the increasing population.

They didn't have access to clean water and food, education for their children, or proper clothing.
