The Talking Birds

One day, Kate saw her grandmother staring out to the lake.

"What are you doing Grandma?", she asked.

"I'm watching the birds, Kate", said Grandma. "They are flying unusually low. How strange! Something happens."

Kate looked at her granny and said:"Maybe they are showing us that there is a treasure hidden somewhere"

People can learn a lot from animals, especially from birds.

Kate asked her granny: "Why are there less birds than last year?"

"Well, it is probably due to climate change."

"Climate change? What is it?"

"Well dear, climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Such shifts can be natural, due to changes in the sun’s activity or large volcanic eruptions. But since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas."

Kate thought for a moment. "What can we do to help the birds?" she asked. Her grandmother smiled and said, "There are many small things we can do. We can plant trees, recycle, and use less electricity. Every small action helps the planet." Kate felt hopeful. She decided to tell her friends at school. Together, they could start a project to protect nature and learn more about climate change.

She told about the things she learnt about climate change.

'' That is horrible that humans can cause such a big disaster on nature!

Last Monday afternoon, we got together to talk about ways to help our planet. We all had different ideas, but we tried to agree on things we could really do to make a difference. George said we should check the taps at school during breaks, and we decided to look at every toilet to make sure no water is leaking. Emma had another idea—she said we should spend one day cleaning the forest near our school. We picked the 23rd of May for that. “That’s a great idea,” said Kate, and we all felt excited to start helping. Our teachers agreed and promised to help us with organising the event and making posters.

And the long-awaited day had finally arrived. On May 23rd, they went to the forest next to the school. The scene they encountered made them very upset. Why do people harm nature, which they live in and depend on? People had thrown their trash into the forest.

Kate and her friends immediately got to work and started picking up the litter. There were even pieces of broken glass on the ground. Their teacher said that broken glass is very dangerous for the forest.

Emma asked, “What kind of danger does it cause?”
The teacher replied, “Broken glass can act like a lens with sharp edges. By focusing sunlight on one point, it can heat up and eventually start a fire.” That’s why broken glass should never be thrown into the forest. Everyone was very surprised by what they heard.
At the end of the day, they returned to school with the happiness of having completed their mission. They told their friends what they had seen and thought about how cruel people can be to nature.

Yet this world belongs to all of us, and we must protect it together.

Today’s lesson was about something unusual yet very real — The Great Pacific Garbage Patch.T eacher began to read:

“Far away in the Pacific Ocean, between Hawaii and California, floats a massive island — but it is not made of sand or palm trees. It is made of plastic. Millions of tons of discarded bottles, bags, fishing nets, and microplastics have gathered together, swirling in the ocean currents. This floating 'island' is larger than the country of Turkey. It is harmful to marine life, dangerous for birds, and it slowly breaks into smaller pieces that spread across the sea. Scientists and environmentalists are working hard to clean it up and prevent more plastic waste from reaching the ocean.”

As we searched we saw that it looks like big island made of trash. Most of it was made of fishing nets. It threatens marine life. For example loggerhead turtles think of the plastic bags as jellyfish and eat them. Seals and other mammals also get stuck in the nets and drown there.
