Through wireless communication, international travel, and popular culture, the world will be more interconnected, exposing populations to cultural traits of other countries. This creates a mix of cultures, which causes culture homogenization, which reduces the unique culture that sets us apart (brittanica). In Korea, the unique music and attitudes such as Confucian principles really sets this country apart from others. Attitudes such as respect for elders, friendships, ancestors, are main elements of  confucian principles in Korea (commisceo). In addition, the unique language of Korea also is a big part of the culture. 

This graph above, shows Korean's the ethnicity that resides in Korea. In total, foreign people that live in Korea totals up to 2.3 percent. With 2 percent Japanese, and 0.1 percent US, Chinese, and others, shows the start of foreign influence in 2000 (brittanica). At the time, Korea is mostly made up of local populations of Koreans thus, being a relatively culturally unique. Influences of culture from other countries may affect these cultures through their popular culture such as America's popular culture, freedom, and individuality. The language, English, can also be affecting the culture of music Korea. This is an example of how countries become more homogeneous as a result of globalisation. However, through analysing Korea, we will be able to understand that actually, globalisation is not causing us all to become a homogenised culture, and is instead, creating a mixture of culture that is uniquely indifferent.

There is also a form of music called guggak, which utilizes korean lyrics through singing. Korea’s cultural trait of using korean language and mood, is very different from other countries (korea.net). Throughout the years, influence from other countries as a result of globalization, will have an effect on the culture of Korea. 

American and western influence in general, has a significant impact on the cultural traits of Korean music. This is shown as in the music from bts, new jeans, and black pink having elements of western music through the use of english language. This new form of music called K-pop, is different from American or traditional Korean music culture, it is instead a hybridisation of cultures from a mix of both cultures through the mix of the 2 languages english, and korean. The root of the start of cultural hybridization between the 2 countries originated from the Korean war. There used to be a radio station called AFKN, which broadcasted Korean music and culture to the American allies. The main idea was to show american soldiers the culture of korea however, the opposite happened when they broadcasted american rock and roll and rap every now and then for entertainment (ubc.ca). As a result, Koreans took interest and started to learn these songs and over time, mixed the elements of both Korean music and Western music together, to create K-Pop. On the whole, this is cultural diffusion at work through the influence of another culture's music. To go more in depth, the songs of K-pop have lyrics that transition between Korean and english. This mixture of language in their new genre of music, appeals to both koreans and westerners alike. The worldwide audience for k-pop is at an estimated 178 million in 2012, and is still growing rapidly (theticketingbusiness). In context, the influence of american culture during the korean war, was the root to the development of K-pop and the hybridization between the 2 languages resulted in cultural diffusion from Korea to other parts of the world. 

In conclusion, the cultural trait of Korean music, is being influenced by American culture and western music in general through the mixture of both languages.

Korean has the same roots as languages such as Japanese, Mongolian, and Turkish. However, over time, the Korean language has been heavily influenced by Chinese through cultural imperialism, which resulted in them using similar words for writing. However, during the 16th century, they have adopted their own writing system that separates themselves from China (asiasociety.org). The result, is an entirely unique language that has Korean's own cultural traits that relates back to the long history. 

Through language, and music, Koreans have been preserving their culture. The popular hit, Gangnam style, is an example of this. In 2023, Gangnam style had a total views of 4.9 billion on youtube. This viral hit really popularized Korean music and language. Foreign interest in the Korean language and music, has a positive impact on the influence the language korean has on the world (koreatimes). Korean people have also expressed discontent with other countries. According to the interview with Moon Ye-seul, a Korean writer, she explained how in Korea, there are always English, Chinese, and Japanese translations in their airports and tourist destinations. However, in China, or Japan, there are no Korean translations. This inequality was very limiting to the Koreans wherever they went. However, the introduction of k-pop and popularization of korean language culture as a result, changed this fact. In countries around the world, they are now adding Korean translations in their airports and tourist destinations. Ultimately, the increased use of Korea, really increased the incentive for more people from different cultures to learn the Korean language and expose themselves to the Korean culture. This cultural diffusion from Korea, helps them preserve their language as it is now becoming one of the most well known, and useful languages around the world. 

The preservation of their music culture is shown in the popularization of K pop. Although K pop is not traditional Korean music, they still have elements of Korean culture such as the language and notes. Specifically values such as “respect authority, respect the collective, behave virtuously, work hard and learn hard, avoid extremes and live moderately” (doingbusinessguide.uk). Through analyzing these values, we can see that Koreans are generally more conservative in their ways of thinking. 

Since 1990, Korea has been making measures to co-exist with foreigners as a result of a declining Korean population (sciencedirect). The result of this decrease in population is a reduction in productivity as well as increased stress as less of the working class are actually supporting the increase in old population. In order to combat this problem, increasing the amount of people coming in from foreign countries can increase the productivity of the country. The increase in productivity would be very beneficial for the overall economy of Korea. This foreign influence is very important for Korea, as shown in the population demographic graph shown above, the majority of the population are in the dependency range of ages 50+ and below 18. This large amount of dependent population is responsible for the increased stress rates in Korea. Through increased population of foreign workers, they can help reduce the stress levels of Korea as well as lessen the economic burden of the high dependency ratio. Furthermore, the foreigners not only bring more productivity but also their own cultures. The increased amount of mixture of cultures creates culture hybridization which can be shown through the increase in international marriages to 7.2%. The number of families belonging to multicultural families has now reached a total of 1.09 million. This is proof of changes in cultural traits of Korea, as people are now changing their attitudes to accept foreign people as a part of their families. Contrast to the cultural traits before, which promoted more same culture marriages, shows the influence globalization has on the attitudes of Korea. 

The need for more work force as a result of a declining population shown in the population demographic graph, means that foreigners that come to the country are now increased. This ultimately, means these foreigners would potentially marry into Korean families as a result of the exposure. These families would slowly adopt the same values of these foreigners as well, which means a more homogenized community in Korea.

These foods are usually preserved and fermented, which really creates a unique taste that is different from other asian cuisines. 

Although Korea has been exposed to many food cultures of other countries as a result of globalization, they are still able to preserve their unique, traditional food. The ways the population preserve their unique ways to make food, and their taste links to their beliefs. In Korea, they believe in the 5 elements, which are earth, water, fire, air, wood and yin and yang. Before the periodic table of elements, Koreans generally referred to these as elements of nature for thousands of years. These beliefs have been embedded into their cultural traits of food, which is shown as they connect the flavors spicy, sour, bitter, sweet and salty to these elements respectively (kellyloves). They believe following these beliefs would make nutritious as well as tasty foods that are beneficial to the health. Contrast to American culture, or western culture in general, they prioritize taste over health most of the time as shown in hamburgers and large pieces of meat. Korea's use of a diverse mixture of preserved vegetables, dried fish and dried meats, creates their unique and nutritious taste (pbs.org). Through the health benefits of korean foods, as well as the unique taste that is indifferent from other cultures, Korea has culturally diffused itself to other cultures as one of the most popular cuisines in the world, further preserving the cuisine for many years to come. 

In conclusion, the belief systems of Koreans are also deeply embedded into the cultural traits of food in korea. The belief in the 5 elements and how it relates to the 5 tastes, as well as the health benefits nutritious food has, makes the Korean food culture uniquely different when contrasting to other cultures. Instead of cultural homogenization, Korean culture is actually being even more unique as the cultural hybridization between western and korean music creates an entirely different genre of music that is recognizable as Korean. To go in depth, cultural homogenisation does not decrease cultural diversity but instead, creates a totally new culture that encompasses and unites the elements of both cultures as cultural hybridization. This culture, is undoubtedly also a part of Korean culture therefore, is still culturally unique compared to other cultures. In addition, the unique food of Korean cuisine still uses traditional methods to create the unique tastes and nutritious foods that is a result of a belief deeply embedded within the culture.
