Hello all and welcome to FL 436: Methods of Teaching World Languages. I'm Brianna, your instructor this course. I am a SIU alum (B.A./M.A. Spanish 2007/2009) so am a fellow Saluki and actually sat in this course in 2007! After leaving SIU I went to the U of Iowa for my Ph.D. and stayed there as The Director of the Language Media Center and a faculty member teaching courses about technology in the world language classroom. Now, I'm back at SIU as an Assistant Professor of World Language Education in the School of Education and the School of Languages and Linguistics. An interesting fact is that I swam on the swim team at SIU. I've swam at Master's (adults) Nationals in Mexico and won several medals. I still swim at SIU Rec on occasion. I also taught at the University of Guanajuato, Mexico this summer, but I'll tell you more about that later! I'm looking forward to working with you and learning more about you.

Hi everyone! I'm Haley, and I am from DuQuoin, IL. I am in the MAT program and would like to be a high school Spanish teacher. I really like to travel so one interesting fact about me is that I would like to live in a Spanish speaking country and teach English before I teach Spanish in the US. I think living in another country where I am immersed in the culture and language would allow me to feel more confident about teaching Spanish in the future.

I have to post a picture of myself with my dogs because my days truly revolve around them, but I wouldn't have it any other way!

Hi, everybody! I'm Ulises and I am from Leon, Nicaragua. I came to the States just three weeks ago. This is the first grad program I'm doing. I have been a TEFL teacher for the past 15 years, and as a GA at SIU, I'm teaching ASL. I love learning languages. I already speak 5 and I would love to learn more. I love to read and eat.

Before coming to SIU, I visited the family that hosted me in the US 11 years ago. I came for a short exchange program (6 months) and they became my family. Now that I came for grad school, I visited them and they drove me down here to Carbondale. They have three daughters and took a similar pic of them the day they took them to college. So it was now my turn to have a picture before they drove me to grad school :)

Hello everybody, My name is Julio. I was born in Texas but raised in Cobden, Illinois, for most of my life. I am married and have two daughters, a four-year-old and a one-year-old. I was in the Army for about six years and got the opportunity to live in countries like South Korea for three and a half years and in Germany for about nine months. Now I am back in southern Illinois as a junior here at SIU. I am currently working on getting my major in Spanish to teach at the high school level. I like learning about other people's cultures, and every year I try to learn a country's history to help me stay open-minded. I have friends from all over the world because of the Army and keep in touch with them as much as possible. At some point in my life, I would like to teach English in a Spanish-speaking country, but I am ready for whatever life throws at me.

Hello! As some of you surely already know quite well, I'm Cole. I am from Witt (and / or) Taylorville, Illinois. My majors are French and Spanish, and I am planning to study Romance linguistics or literatures after I complete my studies here at SIU. You all already know about my chain middle name, so in that vein I will share this fun fact. We have a family motto that we have held onto from "the old country," and it goes as follows : SPĒM HABĒMUS SĪCUT ANCHORAM TUTAM ET FIRMAM (We have hope like an anchor, safe and firm). I hope that having shared this with you all that you enjoy it, and perhaps you may even put it into good use throughout this semester.

Stay strong!
C. E. Calame

Hello! My name is Addison Bean. I am from Dwight, IL, but I lived in Altamont (about 10 minutes away from Effingham) for two years in elementary school. My family actually moved back into the same house when we moved back to Dwight because it didn't sell, so it was like we never left. I am a Spanish-TEP major and minoring in ASL. After graduation I would like to teach junior high/high school Spanish or get my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology though. This way I would hav the opportunity to use my Spanish and ASL skills while still getting to work with kids. This summer I spent the month of June in Spain for a study-abroad program. The picture above was taken in Segovia, one of my favorite cities I visited on my trip.
