All of Pi’s character development leads up to this moment. Pi started this story loathing the tiger that he had to feed and watch over: "Push him off the lifeboat... Kill Him... Attack him... Choke him." (Martel 198-199) Now it is his only friend left. Richard Parker, however, sadly does not care about him as much. Pi's attachment will only finish with him with a broken heart, as Richard Parker may have never truly cared about Pi the same way Pi did about him. As Richard Parker and Pi leave the boat for the final time, Richard Parker "only looked fixedly into the jungle," and then walked out of Pi's life without looking back to say goodbye. This proves in both ways how if an Id of someone's mind becomes uncontrollable, it can end up hurting oneself and others. For Pi, his attachment to an animal that never could truly sympathize with him eventually hurt him by leaving his life. For Richard Parker, Pi's desire to kill him in the beginning, although never fully carried out, put him in danger as Pi's main enemy for the longest time.
