The school was established as a School of Artistic Crafts and its founder was the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the City of Bratislava. She began teaching her in the school year 1928/29 by opening drawing and advertising courses. Through the methodology and focus of the program, the school has consciously set out on the new European stream that emerged from the avant-garde German Bauhaus. The founder, organizer and first director of the ŠUR became Josef Vydra, a historian and theoretician of folk art, an important ethnographer and pedagogue. Together with him, his skills and experience were handed over by the personalities of Slovak and Czech artistic avant-garde: Ľudovít Full, Mikuláš Galanda, Jaromír Funke, Ladislav Kožehuba, Karel Plicka, František Tröster, Júlia Horová, František Reichental, Zdeněk Rossmann, Ferdinand Hrozinka and others. The new teaching methods were complemented by lectures by renowned European personalities. A series of lectures by L. Moholy-Nagy, J. Tschichold, H. Meyer, E. Kállai, K. Teige, L. Sutnár, took place. The SUR was active until 1938, when it was canceled after the rise of fascism. After the end of the war, it became clear that there was a need to establish a School of Art Industry. The activity of the school is renewed in the building of the former Evangelical Lyceum at Palisádach 51. Gradually, the name, character and program focus of the school changed and its development continues to continue today. Student unions opened at school gradually, as required by the practice requirements. The School of Utility Art is a new name for the school, which characterizes the contemporary concept and mission of the school. The current school curriculum follows the progressive and avant-garde ideological references ŠUR and creates the basic outline of the mission of the current Josef Vydra School of Applied Art. The school currently has the following fields of study: promotional art, promotional graphics, utility photography, ceramic design, wood design and shaping, stonework, handmade artwork, conservatory and restoration. The study is 4 years old and ends with a maturitní zkouška. The curriculum consists of general education subjects and specialized subjects. The subject is specified in the individual study fields with an emphasis on the synthesis of theoretical craft-technical and artistic-technical knowledge. Students are guided to solve problems individually in order to gain the necessary artistic and craft level during their studies. At the same time, the focus remains on developing invention and creative potential. The artistic individuality of the school's pedagogues is an essential prerequisite for the creative atmosphere and quality of the school. During its work, the school has been educated by several generations of prominent artists and experts, who have greatly deserved the development of artistic action in Slovakia and brought it closer to the world. They are also important personalities such as artists Albín Brunovský, Andrej Rudavsky, Jozef Jankovič, Anton Cepka, Karol Weisslechner, Vladimir Popovich, Vladimir Gazovic, Július Koller, Stano Filko, Juraj Herz, Juraj Jakubisko, Jozef Bednárik, Elo Havetta, Milan Sládek , actress Zdena Studenkova, scenographer Ján Zavarský, Aleš Votava and others. In 2005, the school commemorated the 75th anniversary of its foundation. On this important jubilee, ŠÚV organized a representative exhibition on its soil. In 2007, the school released a nearly 500-page book with over 1,000 color reproductions that maps its history from birth to present.
