Almost as soon as email became widely used, it began to be used as a means to defraud people. Email fraud can take the form of a "con game", or scam.

How to protect: Always keep your anti-virus software up-to-date, and scan your computer regularly. 
  • Do not reply, even if you recognize the sender as a well-known business or financial institution.
  • Do not click any links provided in these emails (or cut and paste them into a browser). This may download viruses to your computer, or at best, confirm your email address to phishers.
  • Do not open any attachments. If you receive an attachment you are not expecting, confirm with the senders that they did indeed send the message and meant to send an attachment.
  • Do not enter your personal information or passwords on an untrusted Web site or form
  • Delete the message.

  • Be alert to phishing and spoofing: Fraud and deception can hide under many types identities, people should be alert to phone calls and gmails
  • Use strong password and add an authenticity step
  • Secure your mail: Empty you mailbox quickly, lock it or get a P.O. box so criminals don’t have a chance to snatch credit card pitches. Never mail outgoing bill payments and checks from home. They can be stolen from your mailbox and the payee’s name erased with solvents. Mail them from the post office or another secure location
  • Don’t leave a paper trail. Never leave ATM, credit card or gas station receipts behind
  • Be more defensive with personal information. Ask salespeople and other if information such as Social Security or driver’s license number is absolutely necessary
