Died: July 12, 1536, Basel, Switzerland. His last words were in Dutch: “Lieve God” (“dear God”).
He was a brilliant person. In school, Erasmus advanced to the third highest class in the school. While he was in school, he was able to write an extremely impressive classical Latin verse. 
We were often called the most renowned biblical scholars of the time
After Erasmus and his only brother Peter’s parents died, they were forced to attend monasteries. The brothers attended school in Gouda. 
Erasmus found himself unsuited for the monistic life offered to him. In 1497, he left the monasteries for good when he accepted an offer from the local bishop and later got permission to study theology in Paris.

Through his studies and support of humanism, Desiderius Erasmus made a significant contribution to the Renaissance. There are several books by Erasmus, including In Praise of Polly and Handbook of a Christian Knight. Additionally, he updated and revised the New Testament translation. Just a year later, he wrote a book titled Adagia.
His best-known and said to be his best work was In Praise of Folly.  In Praise of Folly was written eight years after Enchiridion militis Christiani in 1509. 
These books made him well known for spreading his beliefs of peace and tolerance in the Renaissance. (Whitters)
