- Year of the event: March 5, 1770

-The British parliament passed the Townshend Acts on common goods to try and make up for some of their losses. Colonists did not like this and wanted to fight back. The Boston Massacre was a riot that killed several people. People went against the guard at the Customs House, and this quickly became a big, disorderly, bloody, and messy fight. People were throwing snowballs and beating each other with sticks. This riot encouraged an anti-British view and then prepared for the American Revolution. People were lying about what really happened, and the soldiers and their commanding officers were charged with murder and put on trial.

History.com editors, editor.
UShistory.org, editor.
Wallenfeldt, Jeff.

American colonists fought in battle for independence in 1775; this excluded African Americans. George Washington made an order stating, “Neither negroes, boys unable to bear arms, nor old men” could join the army. An African American soldier proved his determination at the Battle of Kemp’s Landing along the Virginia coast. They were able to capture an enemy who was a commanding officer. This showed the importance of the win for the British. After this battle, Lord Dunmore, the royal governor made a proclamation of freedom to the enslaved workers of rebels who escaped to British custody.

"How Enslaved Men Who Fought for the British Were Promised Freedom." HISTORY,
     A&E Television Networks, www.history.com/news/
     the-ex-slaves-who-fought-with-the-british.
