Indigenous women are the group of people affected by this issue . There is widespread anger and sadness in First Nations communities. Sisters, wives, mothers, and daughters are gone from their families without clear answers. There are families whose loved ones are missing—babies growing up without mothers, mothers without daughters, and grandmothers without granddaughters. For Native Americans, this adds one more layer of trauma upon existing wounds that cannot heal. Communities are pleading for justice.

MMIW found itself as a movement first in Canada where the grassroots efforts to raise awareness found footing around 2015. Since this time, MMIW has grown and is gaining momentum. It is because of the efforts of Native women and their families this crisis is gaining momentum. The movement gained attention when indigenous families who has lost a family member spoke out against what was happening.

A mass movement in the US and Canada works to raise awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) through organizing marches; building databases of the missing; holding local community, city council, and tribal council meetings; and conducting domestic violence trainings and other informational events. The goal is to amplify ingenious voices and seek action to this issue.

One change that occurred is The state legislation centers on increasing the response to MMIW by monitoring cases through dedicating state personnel and the creation of local task forces. The NIWRC is now tracking legislative actions by state and federal governments to address the crisis of MMIW. Although this movement raised more awareness and sparked more organizing for this issue, ingenious women and chicken still are going missing, and ingenious people are less likely to be heard.

Social media was being used, artwork, and organizing raised awareness. According to wearenative.org the biggest way we can help is by educating ourselves. We each have more to learn about the MMIW movement. For example, did you know that some people chose not to use MMIW, because they believe it is not inclusive enough?
Some people use other terms, such as:
MMIWG = Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls
MMIR = Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives
MMIP = Missing and Murdered Indigenous People
