I grew up in Massachusetts. At the age of twelve, I went to live with my grandmother in Boston to escape the abusive of my father. At the age of fourteen, I started my first school and gained a reputation as a capable teacher and strict disciplinarian. In 1821 I catered to Boston’s rich and elite. During this time, I tutored the poor and neglected students in my own home. By 1836, my health had deteriorated to such a point that my school was forced to close permanently. Later that year, I decided to sail to Europe and spend time recovering on the coast of Italy. Unfortunately, I fell ill in England, where I was taken good care of, by the Rathbone family. William Rathbone was a wealthy humanitarian who fought for better care of the “mentally disordered” of England. It was he who influenced my ideas on the moral and effective treatment of America’s insane; this involved less use of mechanical restraints and more productive activities.
In 1841, I toured a prison in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I was horrified at the conditions in which those classified as “insane” were forced to live. They were underfed, dirty, and in some cases, chained to the walls or forced to sleep on stone floors. That’s when I decided to make it my life mission to improve the quality of life for such people. For the next two decades or so, I traveled to the United States lobbying for the mentally ill. All my efforts resulted in numerous studies, bills, and changes in legislation that improved the lives of the mentally ill. Also, my efforts resulted in the formation of many hospitals specifically for the mentally ill.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, I was named superintendent of Union Army nurses. Although I was in poor health, I organized women into nursing corps, inspected hospitals, and raised money for medical supplies. I insisted on equal treatment of both Union and Confederate soldiers, which angered some Northern Republicans. Yet, after the war, I continued my travels and helped in the rehabilitation of facilities in the Southern United States. In 1882, I moved into an apartment designated for me at the New Jersey State Hospital.

My work falls into this category because I believe that the stress of the potential value and goodness of human beings is emphasized common human needs and seek solely rational ways of solving human problems. For example, when I helped out the and created the asylums for the mentally disabled.

My work falls into this category because I wonder on how the brain works for mentally disabled compared to regular people.
