Not unknown by popular cultures. Has been over looked by historians of slavery. First legally sanctuary place in Florida. There leader who rose up at the time was John Horse which was a black seminal. Bring his people to a long expatiation to freedom. In 1838 John Horse and the black seminal's agreed to stop fighting the US government for moving to Indian territory (Oklahoma) and Legal recantations of there freedom so they can start over as free men. There freedom was undertakes by whites and other blacks. In 1848 US interring general said that they never had the power to recognize there freedom. Which meant they were there for the picking. So the others that were still slaves had to run away (Flee).
