Business information systems are sets of inter-related procedures using IT infrastructure in a business enterprise to generate and disseminate desired information. Such systems are designed to support decision making by the people associated with the enterprise in the process of attainment of its objectives.

Characteristics:

The business information systems are subject to the dynamics of business environment and need to be flexible enough to absorb the inevitable changes in the information needs of business. They have to be efficient to satisfy the demanding and ‘hard task masters,’ the business managers.

Business information systems need to be proactive. They should anticipate changes in information needs of users and accordingly adapt themselves to suit their needs. This has become important because of the fact that the managers get involved in the routine activities to the extent that the decision making becomes a matter of imitating what competitors are doing or planning to do, rather than making an informed choice.

http://www.yourarticlelibrary.com/management/information-system/business-information-system-meaning-features-and-components/70319

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) refers to several systems and software packages utilized by a business in order to manage everyday activities including but not necessarily limited to: manufacturing, acquisition, accounting and project management. An ERP will compile the data from across every information system within a business in order to provide a platform for organisation. Having an ERP in place provides avenues for the usually isolated systems of the various departments of a business to communicate and transmit data to one another.

ERPs manage all of the data that a company will be storing so that future plans for the business and executive decisions can be competently addressed by managing staff. Besides the highest tier of the hierarchy, each department will be able to view data from across the departments of the organisation excluding information related to confidential matters.

Sources:
https://dynamics.microsoft.com/en-us/erp/what-is-erp/

https://www.webopedia.com/TERM/E/ERP.html

http://www.netsuite.co.uk/portal/uk/resource/articles/erp/what-is-erp.shtml

https://www.oracle.com/uk/applications/erp/what-is-erp.html

A Global information system (GIS) is the hardware and software that is used to retrieve and manipulate data in a global context. The general idea behind this set of techniques is ensuring that employees in different countries are able to collaborate on projects more effectively as well as streamlining the data flow process so that top directors are able to develop strategies to lead a multinational organisation into the future. This approach increases the support of outsourcing and globalisation which complement the distributed systems that interact with it. The use of a global IS ensures that a multinational business can intercommunicate with its various departments as well as any subsidiaries it may possess. This can also enable the firm to monitor markets across the planet simultaneously, increase efficiency and reduce overall costs associated with data flow.
Advantages:
· flexible in responding to competitors in different countries

· enables monitoring of foreign markets

· easily transfer data between international branches

· increased overall efficiency and lower costs

Sources:
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:ck06RRcCzUQJ:bcinvasives.ca/documents/doc174_GIS.pdf+&cd=4&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk

https://prezi.com/bflcc-i3ffkk/global-information-system/
