Characteristics:
The business information systems are subject to the dynamics of business environment and need to be flexible enough to absorb the inevitable changes in the information needs of business. They have to be efficient to satisfy the demanding and ‘hard task masters,’ the business managers.

Business information systems need to be proactive. They should anticipate changes in information needs of users and accordingly adapt themselves to suit their needs. This has become important because of the fact that the managers get involved in the routine activities to the extent that the decision making becomes a matter of imitating what competitors are doing or planning to do, rather than making an informed choice.

An ERP will compile the data from across every information system within a business in order to provide a platform for organisation. Having an ERP in place provides avenues for the usually isolated systems of the various departments of a business to communicate and transmit data to one another.

ERPs manage all of the data that a company will be storing so that future plans for the business and executive decisions can be competently addressed by managing staff. Besides the highest tier of the hierarchy, each department will be able to view data from across the departments of the organisation excluding information related to confidential matters.
