In 1950, Alfred Eisenstaedt took photos of Ellis Island for the Life magazine.
On this one, we can see, on the foreground, a mother and her little girl. The woman is sat between lot of other people, all came from Europe.
Maybe this woman came here to protect her child and to raise him in better conditions than in her native country. Perhaps, in her country, there is war, famine, epidemics...
I think this women is stressed because she is certainly thinking of the tests she will have to pass to enter to US. Maybe she is scared because her girl will not be able to pass the test and they will have to separate. Of course, this women should be tired to wait in this conditions: there is a lot of people. They came to Ellis Island and had to wait for a long time to pass tests. Sometimes, people who came together had to separate because one was accepted and the other rejected.
I think this is hard, physically and psychologically to handle this situation and even more with a child.
