Earthenware pottery created during the late Middle Jōmon period. Although most of the pottery containers made during this period were cooking vessels, the eccentric, irregular shape of the rim on bowls of this kind does not appear to be suitable for practical use and may have served a ritual function.

Dogū are small humanoid and animal figurines that were exclusively made during the late Jōmon period. This piece can still be found in the Tokyo National Museum today.

Unglazed earthenware pottery created during the Middle Jōmon Period. During this period, handmade utilitarian wares were treated with inventive, often extravagant artistry, and regional separations between groups resulted in a wide range of types and styles. This earthenware food vessel, which came from the Aomori Prefecture in northeastern Japan, is remarkable for the fine quality of its clay and its sophisticated decoration.

Earthenware with incised and cord–marked designs created during the Final Jōmon Period. This stylized, hollow figurine (Dogū) of a female is representative of the type found in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu.

One of many stone tools created during Paleolithic times. They are meticulously chipped and smoothly polished. This hunting implement required great skill and patience to create.

Jōmon Flame Vessel (3000 - 2000 B.C.)

Because the potter’s wheel was unknown, manual methods were relied upon, particularly the coiling method—that is, preparing the clay in the shape of a rope and coiling it spirally upward. Vessels were simply heaped up and baked in open fires. In its early stages, production consisted mostly of storage jars and deep containers such as this one.

Kamegaoka Site (1000 - 300 B.C.)

A settlement site of the Final Jōmon Period on a hill in the southwest of the Tsugaru Plain that spread over Tsugaru City, Aomori. The site became a Registered National Historical Site in 1944 and the site was discovered in 1622 when clay figures and earthenware were found during construction work of Kameoka Castle by Tsugaru.

An earthenware piece created during the Final Jōmon Period. This is a Kamegaoka style based off of the culture in a waterlogged Jomon site in Aomori prefecture in northern Honshu, Japan.
