What I Know About Architecture As A Fine Art

One of the things that I found fascinating when I was a child is the architecture of the Stonehenge. The first book that I received as a gift was about the world's most beautiful designs. It baffled me because as a child, I could not understand how they built such solid infrastructure given their time.

I am now able to marvel at such beautiful architecture like that of Gaudi's in Barcelona. The intricacy of the design is surely captivating. I have only read about it and admired it from photos, but I surely want to see it in real life as well.

This brings me to my schema on Architecture:

1. Classical architecture has Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian.
2. These columns are used as a design for the temples used by the Greeks.
3. Just because we cannot explain humans built it doesn't mean the aliens did it.

What I Learned

The things that I have learned about architecture are as follows:

1. Organic means part-to-whole-as-whole-is-to-part.
2. Form follows function is useful only as indicating the platform upon which architectural form rests.
3. The term "third dimension" is used in organic architecture to indicate the sense of depth which issues as of the thing not on it.
4. Post and Lintel system is also referred to as Trabeated or Column and Beam.
5. Arcuated Form employs the use of arches instead of columns and beams.
6. Truss System is a structural frame based on the geometric rigidity of the triangle and composed of linear members subject only to axial tension or compression.
7. Dispositio is the fitting arrangement of parts.
8. Size - relation of form to the size of the human body.
9. Scale used to describe a rather subtle consideration related to size.
10. Proportion - relationship of parts of a design to each other and to the whole.

References:
Leynes, Mairene and Noche, Manolo. Manuscript. Architecture. 2017. Print.

I want to study about postmodern architecture and if the "form follows function" still apply to these structures. It would be nice if we could study other architectural designs of Gaudi since his designs were very interesting.
