Historical Setting

The historical setting of the book The Astonishing Color of After is at least in the early 2000s. Based on the idea of the advancements in technology like laptops and planes the time frame would need to be sometime after these things were developed. In the book it mentions, “My father flew home just in time for Thanksgiving, so Mom went overboard with the cooking,” (Pan pg 100). Planes were invented in the early 1900s. Then when the book mentions other pieces of technology it helps narrow down the time frame a bit more. “He folded the laptop halfway shut,” (Pan pg 155). The first laptop was made in 1982 and I’m also assuming that Axel’s laptop is much better than what an old laptop could do. This must mean that the technology that’s in the book must be more advanced than just the bare minimum like when these items were first created. This means that the time frame would need to be after the 1900s has passed. It also needs to be a time when people are more accepting of the LGBTQ+ community because of Cario, who is Leigh’s friend. “‘That’s Cheslin’...’Dating?’...’Yeah’...’I came out to her pretty recently, and I think it was such a surprise that she’s been overcompensating,’” (Pan pg 123). This shows that Cairo was comfortable enough to come out to Leigh and her family with her sexuality. The early 2000s was when people became more aware of the LGBTQ+ community and they also allowed them to be able to express themselves more than usual.

Social Setting

The social setting of the book The Astonishing Colors of After would be when Leigh went to Taiwan to visit her grandparents. The book says, “On the car ride over...about Taiwan,” (Pan pg 43). This shows that Leigh wanted to go visit her grandparents in Taiwan to try to see what her mother might have wanted to tell her about her past. In Taiwan the elders in the community would have the social power. In the book it says, “Dad turns to me expectantly...Don’t you remember the manners I taught you?” (Pan 48). But also if you look at any kind of Asian culture the elders are the most respected out of anyone in the communities and you must always address them properly.

Economic Setting

The economic setting of the book The Astonishing Colors of After, it seems like Leigh and her family seem to be middle class to high middle class. In the book it describes her house, “Our curtains are drawn, but a soft glow pours around the edges,” (Pan pg 440). This shows that her house looks nice, it has electricity, and they also have a lot of furnishings in it. Leigh’s grandparents are able to move when they want to and they are also able to provide for a surprise visit from Leigh and her father. “This is a new home; they moved here two years ago,” (Pan 51). This shows that her grandparents had moved in recent years, moving usually costs a lot of money so they must have the money to be able to move to a new house. Also Leigh and her father didn’t really tell the grandparents that they were coming to visit them but they were still able to provide food, rooms, and other necessary things for them to be in Taiwan comfortably. Also Leigh’s father was also able to send her to camp for a while In the book it mentions, “Sleepaway camp...We’ve already enrolled and paid for you to go...Six weeks of hell,” (Pan pg 231-232). This shows that Leigh’s family had enough money to be able to send Leigh away to a camp for a while without really having to worry about the money that it would require from them. They were also able to pay for all of the mothers medications and treatments for her depression. It says in the beginning of the book, “His other fingers uncurled to show a pile of capsules...Mom’s antidepressants,” (Pan pg 7). This shows that they had bought medicine for the mother and it was also a common thing for them to buy this medicine for her.

The theme statement that I got from the book The Astonishing Colors of After was: everyone can go through some kind of chaos in their life. But by loving others and yourself you can get through the chaos in your life to the happiness and peace on the other side.
