The nation's fears combined with the vulnerable West Coast cities and ports, the response was Executive Order 9066. The immediate effect was citizens from Japan or of Japanese descent were rounded up and placed in relocation camps, also known as detention centers. German and Italian Americans were also affected by this, but most Japanese Americans were the largest group. As a result, many businesses, farms, and houses were left behind and were lost. Long term effects were families that were destroyed as a result of Executive Order 9066. The order also resulted in long lasting hostility and racism towards Japanese Americans. Their fear and reasoning soon became a slippery slope, and their conclusion was to isolate all Japanese-Americans, in an attempt to hide away any spies that might have been lurking in their midst. American citizens were worried that after Pearl Harbor, the Japanese would continue to attack on American soil, using Japanese Americans that resided in the US already.
