Tsura's guilt

A theme I see a lot is Tsura having guilt. Especially on page 179. "Kizzy had been caught--the hospital staff had confirmed it--and Tsura felt paralyzed." She then goes on to say that Wolf would know what to do which is interesting because Tsura's guilt is because she doesn't know what to do. She feels like she is letting Kizzy down because she doesn't know how to save her.

On pages 180-181 Tsura is waiting for a train and she heard a woman crying and her baby and her were on the train tracks. Tsura saved them. Then she learned the woman's husband was a nazi. She at first reluctantly had the thought that she shouldnt have saved them. Later in the chapter she says, "I should have let the infant die." Then she talks about how she was sterilized and could never have children.

On page 185 Ruth and her mother are protesting the arrest of the Jews in their town who were originally supposed to be "safe" due to their ties to catholic men or women. Her mother is being very resilient all of the protestors were. I think that speaks a lot. The soldiers were threatening to shoot and be violent but they still stood there.

On page 187 we see the various responsibilities that Elise has. She probably had to start picking up a lot of slack in the house after Viktor died. Her mother doesn't seem to do anything anymore. It seems like if Elise didn't do any chores or cooked, nothing would get done unfortunately.
