Our story begins with a young girl who asks an esteemed fireman, and our main character, Guy Montage, “Are you happy?” (Bradbury 7). The dystopian novel “Fahrenheit 451” written by Ray Bradbury follows the adventures of Guy as he explores the answer to this question, while slowly learning the truth about his well esteemed job as a fireman (AKA book burner). With a rating of 3 out of 5 stars (given by yours truly), the book has a slow paced action, and discusses the philosophy of what truly makes us happy. The book is perfect for fans of “The Giver”, or general fans of books about philosophy, written in a harder-to-understand vocabulary, without a lot of action, however, the book explores many fascinating topics, and really makes a reader think. And who doesn’t love a good book that opens with a line about arson. So, without further ado, “It was a pleasure to burn”...(Bradbury 1).

Song arranged and sung by Madison Garrett

Piano played by Sophia Ellington

Video filmed and edited by Sophia Ellington

I read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury for my project. I would rate it four out of five stars because of its interesting plot and thought provoking themes. However, the book is held back by its overly wordy writing style, which makes the book hard to understand at times. Fahrenheit 451 is a science fiction book and centers around Guy Montag and his journey from an obedient fireman to a rebel book reader. The book is written in third person but is limited to Montag’s perspective. The story is set in the United States in the future. Montag lives in a large city but leaves for the countryside at the end of the book. In the world of Fahrenheit 451, people are too preoccupied with their own enjoyment to stop and care about others. Technology has consumed all aspects of life and books are banned completely so the government can control information. Because of this, most citizens sit in front of televisions unaware of their surroundings all day. Montag is a fireman whose job is to burn books and start fires instead of extinguishing them. However, Montag eventually becomes unhappy with his life as a fireman and starts hiding books. He thinks that if everyone reads books, they could fix their society because books provide knowledge. Once realizing the importance of the books, he makes a plan to destroy the firemen. Montag’s rebellion against the government and society is the main focus of the story. There are a few important side characters in the story. First, there is Mildred who is Montag’s wife and is addicted to television. She provides an example of a usual citizen in the book’s society. Second, there is Clarisse who is a young, curious girl who talks to Montag at the start of the book and makes Montag start to question his life as a fireman. Third, there is Captain Beatty who is the captain of the firemen and is an antagonist to Montag. He creates most of the conflict in the story. Finally, there is Faber who is an intellectual professor but afraid of the government. He guides Montag in his journey to destroy the firemen. The main themes of Fahrenheit 451 are about the importance of free will and how individuality can be repressed by the government. I thought that the concept and plot of the book were interesting and engaging. This made the book exciting to read. However, the author has an extremely wordy writing style. This hindered my enjoyment of the book because it made the story hard to follow. My favorite quote from the book is when Faber says that “when we had all the books we needed, we still insisted on finding the highest cliff to jump off.” I liked this quote because it provides a different perspective on the role of books in society to Montag’s opinion and also because it is funny. The quote reminded me of skydiving and how people skydive for fun even though it is dangerous. Overall, I enjoyed Fahrenheit 451. While the book has flaws in its writing style, its message and story still stand out and provide an enjoyable reading experience that I would recommend to anyone.

About: This Sci-fi and Dystopian novel was written by acclaimed author Ray Bradbury, and without giving any spoilers I will summarize the book. It takes place in a dystopian society where books must be burned. The protagonist of the story is Guy Montag, a fireman, who stumbles across a young girl who opens his mind to the world of reading and thinking.

Rating: I give this book a 3.5 out of five stars. The culmination of its pacing and length, and general theme add to the points I'd give it. However, one of the disadvantages of the book is that there are certain sections where Montag goes on long trains of thought which are very hard to follow.

Themes: Some of the topics this book portrays include the abuse of power, censorship, and individuality. The first two are illustrated by the government and eve Captain Beatty in the way they treat everybody. Individuality is manifested through the actions of Montag with the way he breaks away from the monotony of his old life and thinks for himself.

Final Thoughts: If you like dystopian books like "The Hunger Games" or "1984" then you should try reading this book. Thanks for reading, bye!
