A) In a documentary by Witness about how Singapore Prison works, there is a food and reward system for prisoners whereby they are rewarded by their good behaviour through snacks and toiletries. As for food, it’s because the food served to them will not always be warm or have great flavour, so it makes prisoners crave for simple snacks like what we eat as children in order to taste a sense of familiarity. In other words, not loose their human characteristics. As for toiletries and others, as it is the basic need for hygiene and survival, it it instilled in the prisoners to uphold good behaviour to attain basic human rights (this is how we interpret T.T so pls don’t be offended!). Additionally, prisoners are constantly monitored through CCTV in their prison cells but they are unaware of the location. So this cultivates a sense of anxiety when they want or feel the desire to commit a crime in prison as there is a lack of privacy even when doing their own personal business in the open toilet. Moreover, in Singapore, there are some form of education classes like workshops (like PDA and work programmes - Yellow Ribbon Programme) so that prisoners can be reformed and gain new skills so that they can re-enter society properly when they’re released from prison.

B) For the basic human rights for prisoners, perhaps for the lack of privacy when using the toilet, there can be those sliding doors that are shown in K-dramas but with a window on the door so that the prison guards will still be able to see what they’re doing. Additionally, have like those open locker concept in those K-dramas, to have a more personalised environment where they can read newspapers (not books! Those hard cover copies can be a weapon!). It can help the prisoners have a form of rehabilitation in their own prison cell instead of spending hours doing nothing. The rehabilitation programme like workshops should also be instilled as it is useful for prisoners to be able to re-enter society easily and attain jobs. As most of them miss out a lot on society’s progression like in terms of technology advancement.
