The kids are reading their new books quietly for 2-3 days as we do this. As we are doing our unit I use small group instruction to help lower level students and to push higher level students. (ex. theme lesson to entire class, struggling students work with me using conflict, resolution, lesson learned strategy to develop a theme, higher level students share their themes and try to find common themes between their books) One on one conferences during these units I allow students to decide what we talk about (discuss their goal and if they are reaching it, state a problem and I give them help solving it or they can just talk with me about their book and what is going on) For these I can get through most classes in one period. I do book talks every time I finish a book and add it to the library, we do book tastings, book speed dating, and we go to the library for a book tasting one time per unit. Have kids return books in a book return bin and you put them back on the shelf so you know where books are. Make checkout simple and easy. Expose them to new titles and topics often (Book Trailer Tuesday, First Chapter Friday, Book Talks, Book Tastings)...they can't get excited to read if they don't know about any good books. Put a sticker on books that are PG-13 or have questionable content and write letter to parents asking them to monitor what students are reading and warn them about this. The kids LOVE to send me book recommendations after they finish a book. I create a slide with the book cover and a summary of the story, plus a heading that says "A book recommendation from ...." Then, I print out that slide and post it in my room. If any of their peers find the title intriguing, they add it to the "Bookshelf" page that they've pasted in their reader's notebook. They then have something to move onto immediately, when they finish their current book. We have a tab at the bottom for each class. Each sheet has the class roster along the left. Every day, one of us will open the spreadsheet and take a lap around the room to have a 10 second conversation with each student who doesn't have a book. Then we log the date on the spreadsheet. It helps us collect data to contact home after a few missed dates.
