         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Feedback to share from attendance at a workshop or conference.<br></strong><br></div><div><strong><em>*Staff member: </em></strong><em>Kristin Johnson</em><strong><br></strong><strong><em>*Date/s attended:</em></strong><strong> </strong>3/22/17</div><div><strong><em>*Workshop/conference title:</em></strong><strong>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<br>&nbsp; &nbsp;</strong>High-expectation Curricula as an Antidote to Deficit-based Pedagogies by Curt Dudley-Marling (CESA 5)</div><div><strong><em>3 Take-Aways Overall:</em></strong></div><ol><li>Instead of "Deficit Thinking" (the problem is THEM, fix the child, fix their family, fix their culture) the alternative is a "Philosophy of Abundance" (ALL children are smart and can learn - What do they already know and how can we build on it, "Anyone who can come to school having mastered human language and communication is incredibly smart")</li><li>Always be mindful of the centrality of respect -Successful teachers respect their students - membership in a particular group tells us almost nothing about the individual</li><li>Instead of preparing kids for schools, what can schools do to prepare for kids? If we don't see brilliance in our kids, maybe it's our curriculum "What's going on here, I know he's smart..."</li></ol><div><strong><em>2 Important Details:</em></strong></div><ol><li>Examples of high expectation curricula - Optimum Learning Environment (OLE) - a gifted curriculum was brought into bilingual special education classrooms in high poverty schools, Poetry Inside Out, Project Challenge (discussion based curricula in math), Inquiry-based curriculum, comprehension instruction through discussion</li><li>Textual interpretation based on evidence-based discussion "How does your evidence support your claim?" instructional method called Shared Inquiry or Interpretive Discussion - see Kristin for details, I have a lot :) essentially learning how to make sense of the text through asking questions **complete lack of evaluation within the discussion**</li></ol><div><strong><em>1 Question I Still Have:</em></strong></div><ol><li>The presenter only briefly touched on how to create a classroom environment and set up procedures that would support whole group respectful evidence based discussion of text, mentioning that that topic would be another entire day.&nbsp; I would like to attend that one also (<br>not offered yet ) &nbsp;;)</li></ol><div><br></div>]]></description>

When students are reading to not expect them to write or do tasks about their reading, just let them enjoy it.  If need to have accountability, 1 sentence response.  </li><li>Classroom libraries should have 500 books accessible for students.  Students should live in a book flood.</li><li>These libraries should be diverse, current, &amp; organized.  Books can be mirrors, windows, or sliding doors into their lives or others.  </li></ol><div><strong><em>2 Important Details:</em></strong></div><ol><li> To prevent summer slide students in Kindergarten-2nd should read 12 books &amp; 3rd and older should read 4-5 books over the summer.  </li><li>Reading for rewards does not build the intrinsic love of reading that we as educators want for all of our students.</li></ol><div><strong><em>1 Question I Still Have:</em></strong></div><ol><li>How can we as an elementary school provide students with more reading opportunities?  How can we reach those students who do not like to read?</li></ol><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Feedback to share from attendance at a workshop or conference.<br></strong><br></div><div><strong><em>*Staff member: </em></strong><em>Kristin Johnson</em><strong><br></strong><strong><em>*Date/s attended:</em></strong><strong> </strong>2/8/18</div><div><strong><em>*Workshop/conference title:</em></strong><strong>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; </strong>Wisconsin State Reading Association (WSRA) Convention</div><div><strong><em>3 Take-Aways Overall:</em></strong></div><ol><li>Access to books is a game changer for kids</li><li>"I would rather lose a book than a child" - regarding letting kids take books home from your personal classroom library (Donalyn Miller) - discussing relationship building around books and reading</li><li>The importance of classroom libraries that are - diverse, current, organized, and have sufficient quantity (5-7 books per child) and how does the collection meet the needs of the students in the classroom</li></ol><div><strong><em>2 Important Details:</em></strong></div><ol><li>To prevent summer reading loss K-2 students need to read 12 books, grades 4+ need to read 4 - 5 books.</li><li>Providing self-selected books for summer reading produces as much growth as summer school - which can even have a negative effect on attitude and motivation for struggling readers.</li></ol><div><strong><em>1 Question I Still Have:</em></strong></div><ol><li>How to incorporate time to "just read" into RtI without losing the fidelity of the intervention - can it be an intervention on its own?  What about summer school?</li></ol><div><br></div>]]></description>
