Introduction

The musical concept, closeness, is when two or more musicians or musical elements act in the purest coordination. Ratliff describes closeness with sounds and visuals of the music but when I thought about closeness in music I saw more of the artists themselves. I understand it better when the closeness is between two musicians in a band that have unbelievable chemistry. I think that when band members are close, they can make music much better than two strangers. They can make music that no one thought was possible. In this padlet, I will show some musical examples of closeness from Ratliff's playlist as well as my own.

When I thought about two close artists, this song came to my mind instantly. These two have unbelievable chemistry and they compliment each other very well in this song. I don't think any other duo could do as good of a job as they did.

"Sometimes the closeness of two musicians within a band is what makes the band capable of moving beyond normal limits. The connection between them becomes the power source, creating enough energy for the rest of the band to feed from or mirror."

-Ben Ratliff

This song was one of the many in Ratliff's playlist. I think this shows closeness pretty well in the more instrumental perspective. Ratliff states that, "Phillips, the drummer, was sensitive and straight to the point; he hooked into his lead musicians and ensured his closeness to them. He built his rhythms out of simple elements: bass drum, snare, and high-hat, and often not all of them at one stretch."

Another song that I thought had a really good duet would be "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" with Elton John and Kiki Dee. They portrayed really good chemistry and this song instantly became a classic for that reason.
