FL25 EDU 515 Week 5 Media Literacy Discussion by Lindsay Uhlmeyer

As an introduction to media literacy, I have included two examples of commercials that aired during Super Bowl XVIII on January 22, 1984. The first commercial was for the Pinellas County (Tampa, FL) Board of Tourism and the second one was for Apple. The viewing audience at the time had no understanding of how the difference in these two commercials would change the advertising connected with future Super Bowls to come. View these two example videos and then watch the short documentary about the Apple commercial that follows: Pinellas County Board of Tourism Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2uKZNRPDMsApple 1984 Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zfqw8nhUwAThe Real Story Behind Apple’s Famous 1984 Ad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsjMmAqmblQ Now that you have seen an example of how media can impact culture and society, I would like you to research and locate an example that relates to your own curriculum and that is appropriate for the grade level and subject area that you teach. For those of you who teach a variety of grade levels or subject areas, such as a K-12 content area or special education, feel free to focus on a particular grade level/subject area if that makes this easier for you.
Choose a Medium: Decide on a type of media to explore. Options include:
Movies
TV shows
News Stories (audio, video, or print)
Images
Commercials
Advertisements
Podcasts
Books
Once you have found an example, post the image or the link/video, etc. here in the Padlet. Below your included media example, include the information below.
Reflect on Positive and Negative Impacts on Society and/or Culture: Think about how the larger population viewed the media.
Reflect on Personal Impact: Think about how the piece of media made you feel or changed your perspective.

I believe that this is a very powerful message shown throughout the commercial. I would show this my students for a couple of different reasons. One being they are at the stage in life where they need to learn about teamwork and not giving up. I would refer to the time period and that the commercial is referencing Covid 19. it also does a good job is showing many diverse cultural and groups, using a split screen. It also shows both women and mens sports in a way that shows they are the same. Competitive and team players. The larger population or media would not see the points I mentioned but instead the flag that was shown. Society would rather talk negativly on Nike for showing and sponcering it. Rather than focus on the little things, the commercial does a great job of again showing diversity and making sure every culture was seen. The commercial promoted teamwork when we were in a crisis. It also can not be reflected on many lives. Many people lost family members, making the commercial emotional for some viewers.

The movie "Thunderbolts, The New Avengers" does an impressive job showing mental health as an issue, especially for people who feel isolated by their own trauma, past or present, and depression. Throughout the movie, Bob is taken into past memories of traumatic events of his childhood, where he is usually alone, but then the "new avengers", in particular Yelena enter into his memories to help. The particular scene linked here, shows a fierce inner battle, Bob about to give in as the others show up, they do not abandon him at his worst, they wrap their arms around him and repeat, I'm here for you, you're not alone. As this powerful scene unfolds it sends the message that what you are going through is ok, you are not alone. This scene puts emphasis on the power of empathy, vulnerability, and community. The lesson, it is ok to talk about mental health, to be open, share your trauma, acknowledge the past, you are not alone. The negative that is Bob's depression is represented as an outside villain, something that is external. The movie could put a negative spin on mental health as an external force instead of an internal illness. In addition, when Bob wins over the Void, he has no recollection of the incident, like amnesia. This, in my opinion, seems like it is supposed to be the "funny" part of the movie but instead, may make those with true mental illness, as dismissive of the harm that can come by not getting professional help. That leads to my final thought, in the movie, having those that love you, group hugs, etc help, that is not sufficient. Overcoming depression is a long process and professional help (therapy) would be beneficial. Overall, I find this clip to be powerful, putting mental illness on the big screen, how one can feel so isolated when dealing with depression. (Side note: I am not an Avengers or Marvel movie person, but this movie, that moment, was a WOW).

This is a great informative commercial to explain to the public what goes on behind the scenes to aid health care providers in diagnosis and treatment of patients. The general public does not know what a Medical Laboratory Scientist is. Mayo did a great job with the explanation of the people behind the results. They slightly mentioned their program at the end of the commercial to gain curiosity and get hits to their website. The brilliance of the timing was right after the covid pandemic of 2020. Medical Laboratory personnel were the workhorses of tracking and diagnosing covid infections all over the world. The field already had a major shortage of workers due to the fact it is an under publicized profession. After the pandemic many baby boomers were burnt out and retiring. The mass exodus from the field was sending panic across the country on how to handle the workflow. Mayo's saw an opportunity to grow their recruitment numbers by putting out this advertisement in 2021. 55.8K people have now viewed this over a 4-year period. That is a low number for the amount of time it has been published. Even though this is a good informative commercial it needs to be on a platform that will get more attention like the Super Bowl. Mayo's timing was right, but they were unable to secure a bigger audience. My personal thoughts are that seeing this ad made me proud to be in the profession I am. We do not get the credit we deserve or the representation in the government to ensure us a more reputable profession like Nursing. My college also makes small advisements for social media regarding our program, however just like this commercial we do not have the platform to get larger views. I think my perspective of how we need to go about reaching large amounts of people has changed and I need to research more ways to promote the program we have at Blessing and reach a larger audience.

This media example is an advertisement for sticky notes, but it helps explain the purpose of creativity and why it's important to keep pursuing the important things. The positive impacts of this advertisement could be an inspiration from the video to ensure productivity and challenge the mind. Ensuring a sense of development and work ethic to help individuals keep pursuing their dreams. For my classroom, the students' confidence is the key to creating trust within themselves. Some negative impacts from this ad are the idea to just sell the product and take advantage of people who need the inspiration of these types of videos to keep moving forward with their ideas. Another negative that could be taken from the video is the idea of giving up on your dreams or creativity because you don't have that specific product. Not all people will feel this way, but some could. The impact of the ad overall could help those who feel as if they are stuck and need to feel inspired to keep working on their self-development. The personal impact of the video changed my perspective and made me feel more motivated to start my work or things I've been needing to get done. I also am a huge Post-it note user, so it was very interesting to see their ad inspire me to use it even more.

I believe this ad sends a message beyond sports. I would show this to my students so they can see that they are more. They are more than their learning disabilities and more than a failing grade. If they work hard, hold themselves accountable, and understand that they can do hard things, they will succeed in many ways....whether that is in sports, school, or life. They may have more obstacles to overcome, but teaching them that they can do hard things is something they need to hear. I think the larger population will only see this as a sports ad. Most people won't see the powerful message behind it.

Eight years ago this was a commercial on the Superbowl. The entire video was not played, but instead a shortened video was shown because the full video was deemed too controversial. I remember seeing the shortened version (also can be found on YouTube) and actually looking up the full video to watch the rest of the message.

In 2016, Trump had campaigned on building a border wall (this video was from 2017), so it was very much a hot topic that everyone had an opinion on. The fact that 84 Lumber wasn't able to put the entire commercial (and I don't think it was purely for time sake, they could have edited it down to get to the same conclusion in a shorter video) says a lot about how it would have outraged some. I've also noticed that (at least now) the comments have been turned off.

On a personal note, the commercial didn't really change my perspective on the issue, because I was already of the same opinion as 84 Lumber that anyone with "The will to succeed is always welcome here." However, I still remember this commercial all these years later and could remember that it was a lumber company with a number in its name, and I had never even heard of that company prior to the commercial. It's probably the only commercial I can remember from that year, so even though it didn't change my mind on the issue, it still left an impression on me.

This clip from a TV show called "Designated Survivor." This clip would be a great for a history or government class. I had a memory from a time when I was in school and just always love learning about the subject. I remember watching clips from varies movies and TV shows in junior high and high school. This show is almost 10 years ago but I never knew about it until now. This clip had me thinking and especially what is going on today society. It is an opening scene where everyone in government cabinet is dead and this normal person working as U.S Secretary then sworn in as president. He was chosen to be the designated survivor. It is a great reflection from students about how they would feel in that situation. I feel the negative is that some would not agree with the outcome or they might have things they disagree with views on the show. I remember watching the clip and was very interested and wanted to know what happened next. It was a scene that I had me think about it could really happen and it's scary to think about. It is a great clip to show an 8th grade class and learning about the constitution. It is a powerful opening scene for TV show.

This ad first premiered in February 2015. While to some, this ad may have been controversial at the time, I think with the world today, it would be even more so now. I think that it has the potential to have a really positive impact on society. Having the people hidden behind a large screen that only showed them in their skeletal form is such a simple and easy to understand way of showing that everyone is the same on the inside and that nothing stops people from being deserving of love. I think this would be a wonderful ad to show the high school ESOL kids I currently work with. They are in a classroom on a daily basis with other students from many other countries and backgrounds and this ad would show them how at our core, we are all just people, wanting to live happily in this world. It might help them to be open minded about friendships with students from other religions, national origins, etc. I remember when this ad came out years ago and how much it really moved me. I love the simplicity of the message and admire how it gets its message across in such a warm and happy way.

In my ELA classes we are reading On My Honor and there is not a movie that goes along with it. I am going to be showing my classes this move since it's in about the time era.

When reflecting on the book and this movie I think about the simpler times where kids about go ride their bikes and play outside during the summer. There always seems to be a leader in the group. Friends could influence other's even if it was something risky that they shouldn't do. I think society would think that this movie would not be appropriate for kids of today. Back in the 80's it was part of everyday life of going out and playing with friends until dark, calling each other names, etc. It was not bad parenting it was what our parents knew. Now parents give their children phones, so they know where they are all the time.

Personally, both the book and the movie have made me think a lot about how and when I grew up, I would not want to change it. Movies and books are shared in two very different ways. The book is more realistic where the movies and media tend to downplay tragic events.

This ad has a lot of meaning to me as this is a ad telling people to chase their dreams no matter how crazy they are. This is something that I would most definitely show my students as this is a very powerful message and gives many different examples of athletes defying the odds and making the most of their disabilities and proving everyone wrong and preforming well in their sports. The negative impact that this message has on the society is that Colin Kaepernick is the main person in this ad and there is a bunch of people that feel a certain way about him because he knelt for the National Anthem. Because Colin is in this the ad created a lot of controversy because this was in the height of him kneeling. Like I said earlier this message is something that has a positive effect on me as I also have very crazy dreams for myself.

As a coach and teacher this speech can be used both on the field with my athletes and in the classroom with my students, especially those in high school. This is Kara Lawson who is the head coach for Women's basketball at Duke University. In her speech she tells her athletes to stop waiting for things to get easier. She tells them to push through the hard and in return they will be able to handle hard things better. She also tells them that as coaches once they see them accomplishing the hard things they are going to make things harder and that that is something that applies not just on the court but throughout life as well.

I feel like this is something kids struggle with. They want everything handed to them with minimal effort. Then get mad when those who are pushing through the hard times are going further.

The introduction of Julia on Sesame Street was a major positive step toward increasing awareness, acceptance, and understanding of autism in young children and families. It helped reduce stigma and gave neurodivergent kids someone to identify with. The character was created with input from autism advocacy groups and therapists, making her portrayal thoughtful and respectful. One possible criticism was that Julia’s representation may oversimplify the autism spectrum or focus too heavily on one version of it, which may not reflect every child’s experience. Still, it was broadly praised as a step in the right direction.

As an educator working with students who have diverse needs, this media made me feel hopeful and seen. It reminded me how powerful representation can be — especially when done with care. Watching Julia interact with Elmo and Big Bird gave me ideas for how to better explain differences and inclusion to my students. It also sparked classroom conversations about how we can be kind, patient, and curious — not judgmental — when someone learns or communicates differently.

My chosen media example is the movie Hidden Figures (2016). I posted a YouTube video from the movie with a significant mathematical reference.

The film reflects a true story of three African American women (i.e. Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson) who worked as mathematicians (referred to as “human computers”) at NASA and they played crucial roles in the success of the U.S. space program (particularly John Glenn’s orbital flight in 1962). The use of mathematics was central throughout the film as Katherine Johnson used advanced calculations of “analytic geometry” to determine flight paths and landing coordinates. I found it interesting that the use of an IBM (International Business Machines Corporation) computing machine was also a central focus within this movie (i.e. considering the IBM reference within the famous “Apple 1984 Commercial” for the prompt to this exercise as well).

My reflections on the “Positive and Negative impacts on Society and/or Culture” are as follows:

On the positive side, the movie brought overdue recognition to African-American women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, which likely had an inspiring effect on many young individuals (or students) to see mathematics not just as abstract equations but as tools that can change the history of humankind. It highlights how mathematics can be applied to real-world, high-stakes problems like space travel. Culturally, the film also challenged stereotypes and broadened the representation of mathematicians in media.

I had to do some research in order to discern a negative side, and I found that some critics of the movie argued that Hollywood dramatized or oversimplified certain historical events, which could have distorted how some people perceived both math’s complexities and the systemic barriers those women faced.

For me, as a math educator, Hidden Figures reinforced the importance of showing students how math/geometry connects to meaningful, real-world applications. Watching how Katherine Johnson supposedly applied analytic geometry so confidently to solve trajectory problems deepened my perspective on how I can possibly frame classroom lessons, not just as abstract exercises, but as skills with powerful (life-changing) potential. The movie made me feel even more motivated to figure out ways to further connect my students’ math learning to authentic problem-solving and to emphasize its representation within STEM fields.

Pictured here is the cover of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. Published in the early 1800s, the cultural and societal perspective has shifted over the years. Being sympathetic to the abolitionist movement leading up to the Civil War, Stowe created a fictional character based on the real life and works of previous slaves. By depicting the real life hardships and offenses endured by slaves, Stowe's work was met with popularity that would lead to cultural attitudes to change in favor of the abolitionist movement and inevitably the Civil War. While Stowe's work was instrumental in helping slaves obtain their freedom on a national scale, the main character, Uncle Tom, has ironically become a pejorative to many in the black community due to the derogatory stereotypes that came out of later adaptations of the book. As far as how this particular piece makes me feel, as I've gotten older I have found an appreciation for the work. I have generally found myself having conversations with debating whether it is permissible to "pander" in order to be successful or get ahead in order to be able to tell their own story appropriately.

Pictured is an example portfolio created by an individual on Reddit. Most people reacted positively to this image and were impressed by how organized and resourceful the person who posted the image seemed. Students in personal finance learn about income, expenses, and investment approaches, so I figured this was appropriate to share. This image is also an example to show students how valuable creating a portfolio to track finances can be to reduce stress.

I found the image to be inspiring and a great resource for people to use. A lot of people may struggle to find a way to track living expenses and maintaining a balance with their finances, and this is a great example to show people a way to do that. This is something I need to probably do too.

Week 5 Padlet Discussion - Faith Pender

The ad that I chose to do this on is the “Aaron Burr” Got Milk advertisement. This advertisement depicts the historical figure Aaron Burr, who is listening to classical music on the radio while spreading peanut butter on a piece of bread. The radio host announces that there is a $10,000 contest in which he makes a random call and asks the question, “Who shot Alexander Hamilton in that famous duel?” The phone ends up ringing, which is the announcer asking the question; however, the man had bitten his sandwich, and the peanut butter makes his answer unintelligible. He tries to wash it down with milk; however, he only has a drop left. Ultimately, the announcer hangs up, and although he answered the question correctly, without milk, he couldn’t wash the peanut butter out of his mouth. This ad was directed towards anyone in the family—the children, adults, and even grandparents. The overall objective of the commercial was to increase milk consumption that was declining in the early 1990s.

There were several positives and negatives of this ad. The phrase “Got Milk” was a popularized slogan that people would repeat and would easily be recognized. It also indirectly encouraged interest in American history, which would be the goal of showing it to students as well. Some students did not know who Aaron Burr was, but he is a significant individual in history, so some would learn who he was so they would understand the ad. Although this ad was funny and clever, which drew in an audience, there were also several negatives that could be perceived. There were many recreations of the “Got Milk” ad, which could be seen as repetitive. Additionally, in terms of history, it may have been seen as knowledge that wasn’t important or that could be skimmed, rather than learned more deeply.

I think the ad was a clever way to bring some sort of history into it. I think with this, it can be shown to students to bring questions to the table, such as “What do you think they were implying with the duel?” or “What was the significance of the duel?” It was relatable when thinking about peanut butter and how it affects speaking. It also was relatable for history. I did not know much about Hamilton, as I haven’t watched the play or films. After seeing this ad, I looked up who both were and their significance in history. In this way, the ad connected the audience to a broader topic, which is American history. Looking at the ad and comparing it to advertising, I realized how important advertising can be. The ad was able to be a big influence on the everyday world, as the catchphrase “Got Milk” was very popular throughout the rest of the 1990s and even in the 2000s. It was able to shape everyday habits as well, encouraging many to drink milk, as well as subtly introduce history into everyday lives as well through the use of Hamilton and Aaron Burr.

This commercial from target is great for my 1st grade classroom. I personally have a wide range of cultures and backgrounds on my roster. This particular ad showcases inclusivity of diverse backgrounds. This is helpful for young children because they are always excited to see people that look like them on T.V. I believe it helps normalize diversity and provides a sense of comfort. It is also a great way to encourage the self-expression. The commercial also focuses on getting families to back to school shop to prepare students for the year. I like the diversity that is depicted. I do think commericals for shopping do glamorize outfits and trends. This can be a negative because it takes the focus off of school and makes it about buying clothes and supplies. Not all families may be able to afford it which and cause a divide based on economic standing. The population is not all in the same place, therefore, the idea of fitting into a certain trend is not for everyone. I personally reflect on the advertisement and realized how much it can simpact what we think we “need.” It caused me to question cultural norms around school preparation. I think people get caught up with trying to impress others based on what they think is needed. Thus allowing me to empathize with the pressures families face during the back-to-school season. I see how society can really distort the idea of what is essential.

I picked the JUUL E-Cigarette Ad. I chose this topic because a lot of students at my school vape and some even smoke weed in bathrooms and classrooms. This commercial shows people using JUUL devices in social situations and focuses on the sleek design and ease of use. I think it’s a good example to look at in high school classes because it shows how companies use visuals, lifestyle appeal, and “cool” imagery to get attention, especially from younger audiences.

Positive and Negative Impacts on Society/Culture:
On the positive side, the ad shows people hanging out and having fun, which makes the product seem normal and social. On the negative side, it encourages teens to use vaping products, which can be harmful and addictive. It also shows how media can influence choices without people realizing it.

Personal Impact:
Watching this ad made me realize how much advertising tries to make unhealthy stuff look cool. Seeing it made me think about how students at my school are influenced by ads and trends, and how media can affect decisions even when people know it’s bad for them.

The documentary successfully raised awareness about the fast food industry's influence on health. Following its release, there was a noticeable increase in discussions regarding nutrition and obesity, prompting consumers to scrutinize their eating habits. It sparked conversations about the broader implications of convenience foods and their role in modern society. The film encouraged schools, families, and communities to rethink dietary habits and advocate for healthier lifestyle choices. While the film aimed to expose the dangers of unhealthy eating, some critics argue that it presents an exaggerated perspective. By focusing exclusively on Spurlock's 30-day experiment, it risks overshadowing the complexity of dietary choices and individual responsibility. The film could lead some viewers to dismiss fast food entirely instead of promoting balanced approaches to diet. The extreme nature of Spurlock's experiment may foster a simplistic view that all fast food is irredeemably harmful, rather than encouraging moderation and informed choices. Watching "Super Size Me" was a significant experience for me. Initially, I found it shocking to see the drastic physical and psychological changes Spurlock underwent during his month-long diet. It made me reconsider my own habits, especially regarding convenience foods that I often consume without much thought. The film motivated me to explore nutrition more deeply, leading me to research healthier alternatives and become more mindful about what I eat. I also noticed a change in my perspective on fast food; instead of seeing it as a harmless option for busy days, I now recognize it can have real consequences for health and well-being. Overall, "Super Size Me" serves as both a cautionary tale and a call to action, urging viewers to take charge of their health while considering the broader societal impacts of food choices. It challenged me personally to think critically about my lifestyle and its implications.

Podcasts is something that has become way more prevalent recently. A lot of people are choosing to listen to these as a way to get their news and to stray away from the massive news companies like Fox News and CNN. In a way this is fantastic because more and more news and media outlets are forming and allowing people to gain knowledge in a way that is hopefully not controlled by the masses. What I mean by this that there are many more media outlets that have become mainstream because of podcasts. At the same time this can become detrimental for the same reason Fox News and CNN can be detrimental. Many people may not be able to fact check anything or make sure what they are listening to is correct. Although one of the great things is that there are so many out there that they may fact check each other. I do believe that this has helped a lot of people when it comes to gaining knowledge and media because people have much more access to the news and current events without having to listen to the radio and or watch the news in the morning or the evening. It is quite literally a push of a button away.

Personally I love it because it is like listening to music when you work. You can turn any sort of podcast that you want on. Whether it be political, educational, mind numbing, or just one of your general interests you can put the podcast on and learn a thing or two about any topic.

Reflect on Positive and Negative Impacts on Society and/or Culture:
Ted Lasso has a realistic story that shows a “Cinderella team” doesn’t always win. It emphasizes that if teams stick together, support each other, and challenge each other, they can improve over time. The show promotes teamwork, resilience, and emotional intelligence, encouraging audiences to value collaboration and empathy over just winning. On the negative side, some may feel it’s idealistic at times, but its lessons about perseverance and positivity resonate with many viewers.

Reflect on Personal Impact:
Personally, I use lessons from Ted Lasso in my coaching. I love Ted’s energy, which reminds me of times I used to have fake energy. Watching him has taught me to always look for the bright side, stay positive, and genuinely encourage others, which has made me a better leader and coach.
