         <description><![CDATA[<pre>Scottish novelist born in Alloway, County Ayrshire, a pioneer of European romanticism. His love for nature and the traditions of his native Scotland, coupled with the economic difficulties he faced as a teenager, motivated his rebellion against the social conditions of the time, and he vigorously expressed his work, which also reflected his bohemian life. Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect (1786), whose success made him abandon his plans to emigrate to America, and Tam O'Shanter (1789), a narrative poem of burlesque character, constituted his most valuable works.

 After the second edition of his poems, he devoted himself to the composition of popular songs and wrote about three hundred, which appeared in compilations of James Johnson and George Thomson. Some of these compositions were original and others had been adapted from traditional Scottish folklore. In all of them, however, there was a growing interest in the poet to reflect with realism the popular spirit without losing his poetic rigor. Similar features presented. Having weak health, he suffered an attack of rheumatic fever (1795) and died the following year, only 36 years old, in Dumfries, Scotland.</pre><div><br><br></div>]]></description>
